Understand the Motif
Sickness: A condition of the mind, not the body: a form of wrong-mindedness and the belief that minds can be separate. It is the direct consequence of choosing separation and serves as witness to the guilt the mind believes it carries.
Sickness: Sickness arises from the mind’s decision to separate from God and from other minds, and it can only be healed by reversing that decision through joining. The body cannot be sick on its own; it reflects only the mind’s belief and purpose. Sickness is chosen, though not consciously, by the mind as a means of demonstrating frailty and separation, of witnessing to guilt, and of binding the mind to the body through fear. The ego has profound investment in sickness because it proves the ego’s claim that the body is real and the mind is powerless. Yet at the same time, sickness is a call for love—the effect of love denied and therefore a request for the very healing it appears to refuse.

T-8.IX Healing as Corrected Perception · Paragraphs 1, 3, 5, 8 acim.org/acim/en
Distorted perception fears awakening and uses sickness to sleep.
As you read, notice how the theme Sickness appears in these paragraphs.
Consider the Context
This stop extends the false-witness idea into a scale‑free principle: perception itself can be sick. When the mind is afraid of awakening, it uses bodily symptoms as physical expressions of a split purpose—one part reaching for truth, another part trying to keep sleep intact.
The insistence that sickness has no degrees matters here. Ranking symptoms makes error seem real and encourages the ego to negotiate exceptions. Healing as corrected perception treats the whole pattern at once: the mind chooses a different teacher, and the need for sickness to guard sleep is weakened. This is also why a serious symptom and a minor one can carry the same temptation: to postpone waking. The cure is willingness now, not a hierarchy later.
Reflect
In what way might sickness be helping you avoid ‘waking up’—seeing clearly, deciding firmly, or joining without reservation?
Practice
For one minute, drop the story of degrees (worse/better, serious/minor). Say: “I want one purpose,” and ask the Holy Spirit to correct your perception of this entire situation.
