Understand the Motif
Sinlessness: The true and unchangeable state of the Son of God: a permanent fact of creation that can never be altered by what the Son believes about himself. Because it is already true, nothing needs to be paid for or redeemed by suffering, and the chain from sin to guilt to punishment has nothing to rest on.
Sinlessness: Sinlessness is the condition of absolute wholeness, free of sin, pain, and suffering—the only state God’s Son was ever created to be and the only state he is now. While guilt persists in consciousness, this truth remains obscured; yet nothing the Son has done or could do would change what God knows him to be. The belief in sin is baseless because sin would require that reality itself be violable, that God could be made incomplete, and that the eternal could become temporal. Sinlessness is a state to be recognized, the natural consequence of abandoning the desire to attack.
Notice the Shift
When it comes to exceptions, right-mindedness invites you to shift:
Consider the Context
Total release is tied to an uncompromising standard: you must be willing to see your brother as sinless with no exceptions. The logic is stark—one excluded person makes truth meaningless and preserves belief in sin. The ego claims you cannot look on anyone without guilt, yet the Course insists the Holy Spirit was given for escape from guilt, so the means to see innocence must exist. This stop makes the brother’s sinlessness the doorway out of misery: a holy brother becomes savior rather than enemy, leading you toward Heaven. Sinlessness is therefore not partial forgiveness; it is a complete shift away from the exception-making that keeps the ego’s world in place.
Reflect
Who is my one exception, and what do I think I gain by holding them outside innocence?
Practice
Bring your one exception to mind. Say: “Holy Spirit, I am willing to have no exceptions.” Then add: “Help me see this brother as savior, not enemy.” Sit quietly and let the grip of the verdict loosen.
