The Little Willingness

×
~4 min

Understand the Motif

Guilt: The ego’s foundation: the self-condemnation that follows from believing you have actually attacked God and separated from Him—the verdict that punishment is deserved. It makes the ego possible and Heaven impossible.

Reflect

Where are you trying to make yourself ready before accepting help, and how does that preparation project keep guilt—and fear of salvation—intact?

Consider the Context

A brief line names a subtle mistake: trying to solve guilt by pulling Atonement into it. The mind makes guilt and then attempts to incorporate salvation into the guilt system, which turns help into something fearful. In that distorted plan, Atonement becomes an ordeal you must prepare for, and forgiveness feels like exposure to punishment. The correction is humility in the Course’s sense: a little willingness is enough. You do not need to perfect yourself before you accept correction, and you do not need to make guilt real in order to be released from it. This stop invites you to drop the self-preparation project and let the Holy Spirit undo the guilt you made.
