T-13.II The Guiltless Son of God acim.org/acim/en
Guilt’s hidden sentence is exposed and undone as the mind shifts from projection and punishment to remembering the guiltless Sonship through Atonement’s gentle reinterpretation.
Guilt: The ego’s foundation: the self-condemnation that follows from believing you have actually attacked God and separated from Him—the verdict that punishment is deserved. It makes the ego possible and Heaven impossible.
Notice the Ego's Pattern
This milestone exposes projection as the ego’s attempted “solution” to guilt. The mind tries to get rid of guilt by locating it elsewhere, yet that strategy only conceals guilt and keeps it active. Because guilt blocks the remembrance of God, the ego must hide its source while still using its effects—fear, defensiveness, and the impulse to attack guiltlessness itself. Guilt then attaches to surface ideals and failures, while a deeper secret is protected: a belief that the mind betrayed God’s Son and condemned Him to death. The healing move is not confession for punishment; it is bringing the hidden story to light so it can be recognized as nothing. As the secrecy lifts, so does the cloud over remembrance.
Reflect
When you judge someone, what relief do you expect to gain—and what does that reveal about a guilt you are trying not to face within?
Practice
Recall a recent judgment. Notice the wish to be right. Say: “I was trying to hide guilt by projecting it.” Ask the Holy Spirit to show you innocence in both of you, and let the need to keep a secret soften for this moment.
Guiltlessness: Your eternal state as God created you, untouched by anything that seems to have happened, and never made more secure by finding anyone else guilty.
Receive the Correction
The trail now exposes the ego’s counterattack. When guiltlessness is noticed, the ego tries to reverse meaning by calling the guiltless guilty and treating innocence as dangerous. This inversion justifies more attack and keeps the hidden guilt story intact.
Against that confusion, the correction is clear: only guiltlessness protects. Protection comes from bringing what is hidden into the light, not from defending the secret or punishing it. When guilt is exposed to the Holy Spirit without fear, it is dispelled—because it never had real grounds. Seeing this reversal is already a release, because you stop taking the ego’s alarm system as guidance. Whenever innocence feels risky or unfair, treat that as the ego’s alarm and ask for an interpretation that does not require a hidden culprit.
Reflect
Where do I secretly believe innocence is unsafe—and what do I think it would cost me?
Practice
When you feel the urge to attack or defend, whisper: “This is the ego’s reversal.” Ask the Holy Spirit to bring the hidden guilt thought into gentle light so it can be undone.
