Wrong-mindedness is described here through the language of insanity and delusion because that is what a private perceptual world is: a closed system of meaning the ego manufactures and then believes. In that system, you see what confirms your story and filter out what would question it. You can even feel as if you are hearing, but you are mostly hearing your own internal voice reflected back.
One consequence is emphasized: communication becomes impossible. If perception is private, then relationships become negotiations between separate worlds, not joining in shared meaning. The ego can call this “being understood,” but what it really wants is agreement with its interpretation. That is why the private world must exclude light—anything truly shared would expose the separateness as self-chosen.
The corrective value of this description is responsibility. The text does not blame you for being delusional; it points out that the private world is self-made. What is made can be unmade. You do not have to fix the content of every distorted image. You only need to notice that you are choosing isolation and that the cost is peace.
A practical step is to question the authority of your private meaning. When you feel certain and alone, consider that you may be hearing only your own voice. In that moment, invite the Holy Spirit to give the situation a shared purpose. This can look like a brief willingness to listen without rehearsal, to allow another’s presence to matter, or to let your interpretation be corrected. As the private world opens, wrong-mindedness loosens—not by force, but because light is no longer excluded.
Reflect
Where am I listening only to my own story and calling it “reality”?
Practice
Before your next interaction, pause and ask, “Help me hear past my own voice.” Let one moment of listening be free of rebuttal, and silently offer the exchange to the Holy Spirit.
Understand the Motif in Context
Wrong-mindedness: The ego’s attempt to see yourself as you wish to be instead of as you truly are—a perceptual state that sees only what the insane mind has fabricated and calls reality.
