One of the Course's recurring strengths is its refusal to flatten the path. There is a difference between a sleeping mind in conflict and a mind at peace, even though both are still short of knowledge. This stop names that difference without losing the larger goal. Healing occurs in a mind-state that does not yet know God. That statement keeps the levels honest. At the same time, the Holy Spirit’s work is a step on the way to knowing that you are in God. So the in-between state is neither meaningless nor final. It is the classroom in which opposition is softened.
Right perception is especially important because it aligns the mind with God’s laws instead of the ego’s. In practical terms, that means conflict is no longer treated as meaningful, private interests are no longer made sacred, and a brother is no longer perceived as the source of salvation or attack. Such correction does not produce knowledge, but it opens the mind to it. This guards against two errors. One is contempt for healing because it is only perceptual. The other is attachment to healing because it feels peaceful. The section invites a wiser gratitude. Right perception is profoundly helpful precisely because it is temporary. It is the form that escape from conflict takes while conflict still seems possible. The student learns to use that step fully, without demanding that the bridge become the destination.
To keep this intermediary step honest, notice the temptation to turn peace into a private refuge: “At least I feel better now.” The Holy Spirit’s peace is never meant to isolate you; it naturally extends. When you feel calmer, use that moment to include someone you would normally exclude—by a kind thought, a prayer of release, or a willingness to listen. That extension is how right perception stays aligned with God’s laws. If you keep peace for yourself alone, it quietly becomes another special state to defend. Let it move through you instead. The bridge remains a bridge when it carries you toward joining.

Where do I dismiss a healing step because it is not yet final?
Practice
Name one small shift in perception you have minimized. Thank it as a real step away from conflict, and let that be enough for now.
Understand the Motif in Context
Perception—Knowledge: Perception is a temporary, learned, judgmental interpretation subject to fear or love, while knowledge is certain, total, and timeless—differing fundamentally in nature, though perception can ultimately transfer to knowledge.
