The Function of Reason

Understand the Motif

Decision: Decision is the one remaining freedom and power, the continuous choice between two fixed alternatives: truth or illusion, love or fear, God or the ego. Every decision is made at the level of mind and determines what you perceive.

Sit with This Teaching

Decision condenses to one question: what do you want to see? Responsibility for sight becomes fully apparent—the goal you choose selects the feelings you experience. Reason is the capacity to accept help and correction; madness is the insistence on choosing sin over healing. Because minds are joined, choosing healing is always a relational act.

Consider the Context

Perception is described as a choice: the voice you listen to and the sights you look for determine the world you find. When the ego’s voice is chosen, the self-image that follows is small, vulnerable, and helpless. When the other Voice is chosen, a sense of freedom becomes possible.

Reason plays an essential role because the ego will never ask the decisive question. Reason can notice contradiction and ask, “Why choose the voice that hurts?” Decision therefore becomes willingness to let reason function and to choose what you hear and see in a different direction.
