After naming spells, the thread generalizes the same error. Magic is any attempt to correct an inner problem at the level of effects. The ego’s method is to take misthought as a given and then manage its outcomes: adjust behavior, change circumstances, fix symptoms, smooth over conflict. It can produce a rearranged surface, and sometimes that surface is genuinely kinder. But it cannot touch the root—fear in a divided mind.
This is where the Course’s form/content distinction becomes practical. A change in form may be helpful, but it is not the same as healing. Healing is a change in the mind’s purpose: choosing the Holy Spirit instead of the ego. Without that shift, the same fear will simply find new forms.
Notice how control masquerades as virtue. “If I can just manage this correctly, then I’ll be safe.” Yet safety is not an outcome; it is a decision about cause. The ego avoids that decision because it would reveal the mind’s responsibility for perception. That is why the section implies a different move: abandon external control as salvation and address the mistaken choice.
In practice, you do not have to stop doing sensible things. You only have to stop worshiping them. When you catch yourself trying to manage an effect to quiet an inner discomfort, pause and ask: “What am I afraid to look at?” Then choose again. Let forgiveness do what control cannot: undo the belief that fear is justified, by returning the problem to the mind where it can be corrected.
Symptom control can also show up as mental policing—forcing yourself into “better” thoughts while quietly keeping the belief that fear is warranted. That strain is the ego managing the ego. Forgiveness is gentler: it lets the hidden premise be exposed (“I believe I need defense”) and invites a new interpretation. As that premise is undone, helpful changes in behavior or circumstance can happen without being worshiped as the cause.
Reflect
What am I trying to manage or control so I don’t have to face a fearful thought?
Practice
Pick one current symptom you’re managing. Pause and ask, “What fear is this trying to cover?” Offer that fear to the Holy Spirit, and let your next step come from peace instead of control.
Understand the Motif in Context
Magic: The uncreative deployment of mind that assigns causative power to matter and the body—treating physical effects as independent of mental causation and therefore beyond mental control.
