T-18.II The Basis of the Dream acim.org/acim/en
The dream rests on guilt-fed specialness, expressed as the ego’s special relationship; offered to the Holy Spirit, the same form becomes a happy dream that leads toward waking.
Recognize What's Happening Beneath
Beneath the changing scenes is a single desire: to keep a private self intact. Guilt is the engine that makes this seem necessary, so the dream is arranged to justify defense, control, and special salvation—even when it calls them love.
The correction offered is understated but radical: don’t fight the dream’s forms; bring their purpose to the Holy Spirit. As willingness grows, projection loses its footing, joining is recognized as of mind (not bodies), and waking is approached through a gentle, shared release.
Reflect
Where am I reversing cause and effect—treating a person or situation as the cause of my feelings—and what specialness bargain is hidden there?
Practice
Pick one upset and identify the cause you assigned outside you. Say, “I have reversed cause and effect.” Offer the specialness wish underneath to the Holy Spirit, and ask for a happy dream instead—one shift in perception that brings you closer to waking.
