Understand the Motif
Holy Relationship: A special relationship transformed by the Holy Spirit into a sustained, practical demonstration of perfect joining that becomes a channel for healing and salvation to the entire Sonship.
Holy Relationship: A holy relationship begins the moment one mind hands the relationship over to the Holy Spirit for His purposes rather than its own, accepting His goal as immutable and immediate; the other need not agree, or even know. It is the holy instant expressed and made stable in the world: an old relationship reborn with new purpose, unmarked by the body and built on perfect vision of your brother’s sinlessness. The form need not change at all, and any strain that follows the shift is not failure but the old structure meeting a purpose it was not built to serve. You extend wholeness by recognizing him as already whole, seeing completeness rather than seeking to fill a lack. Through it you discover that faith in your brother is faith in Christ, and that a will so joined has the power to heal all suffering.
Notice the Shift
When it comes to beginning, right-mindedness invites you to shift:
Consider the Context
This introduction reframes the holy relationship in high definition. It is presented as a joining God has made, rooted in wholeness rather than in lack. The relationship begins with each one looking within and seeing no lack, then joining with another who is whole as himself—not taking from him to fill a perceived need.
Differences are pushed back to the level of the body, and belief shifts toward sameness as sight is transformed to vision. The relationship’s holiness forgives both partners and undoes the effects of mistaken seeing, removing the felt need for sin. It also cannot remain private; what is born of such joining must extend beyond the pair.
Chapter openings often reset the frame, and this one does so for the holy relationship. The starting point is not romance, compatibility, or even interpersonal harmony. The starting point is wholeness. An unholy relationship begins from lack: I need something from you, I need you to be different, I need you to confirm my separate self. A holy relationship begins from the opposite premise: nothing is missing in me, and nothing is missing in you.
From that premise, joining is no longer acquisition. It is recognition. Each one looks within, sees no lack, and then joins with another who is equally whole. Differences are not denied, but they are relocated. They belong to the body level and therefore cannot define what the relationship is. As belief in difference is relinquished, sameness becomes thinkable, and sight begins to be transformed into vision.
The introduction also emphasizes forgiveness as undoing effects. The holy relationship does not pretend mistakes did not occur; it refuses to keep their effects by maintaining the need for sin. Its holiness forgives both partners by removing the interpretation that made sin useful. Finally, it insists on extension. Joining that is rooted in wholeness cannot be hoarded. It naturally leads to recognition of the Son of God beyond the pair and to the sense that what is born in such union cannot end.
Beginning from wholeness is not a demand that you have no human needs or preferences. It is a correction about identity. Needs do not define you, and they do not make your brother responsible for completing you. From wholeness, you can still communicate, ask, and respond in form—but without the desperation that turns the relationship into a substitute. This opening sets the direction: forgiveness removes the effects of mistaken seeing, and joining naturally extends. A relationship that begins from wholeness cannot end in possession; it ends in giving.
Reflect
Where do I start this relationship from a sense of lack, and what would change if I began from wholeness instead?
Practice
For one minute, look within and affirm, “Nothing is missing in me.” Then hold your brother as equally whole, and ask the Holy Spirit to let this joining extend beyond the pair through one simple act of kindness or forgiveness today.
