Understand the Motifs
Decision: Decision is the one remaining freedom and power, the continuous choice between two fixed alternatives: truth or illusion, love or fear, God or the ego. Every decision is made at the level of mind and determines what you perceive.
Decision: You are always deciding, in every instant, which teacher to follow and which thought system to align with. The two alternatives are not multiple or flexible; they are fixed and mutually exclusive. Decision is not made by the body or through behavior but only at the level of mind, and what you decide is immediately reflected in what you see and how you interpret the world. The loss of peace is the signal that you have chosen wrongly—information rather than condemnation, since a mistaken decision is corrected by deciding again and not by punishment. When you decide from the ego, you perceive a world of scarcity, attack, and loss; when you decide with the Holy Spirit, you perceive holiness and innocence.
Holy Spirit: The Communication Link that connects God with His Sons in their separation, dwelling in the part of the mind between ego and spirit, speaking only to call you back to truth, to healing, and to remembering what you are.
Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is a Thought of God shared equally with all the Sonship: the Mind of the Atonement that bridges the gap between perception and knowledge. He is perfectly trustworthy, conflict-free, and unwaveringly vigilant for joy. Unlike the ego, which speaks first and always in judgment, the Holy Spirit answers quietly, never commanding or demanding, instead gently reminding you of what you already are. He does not act unbidden, since He will not override your choice; He answers only when invited. What He corrects is meaning and purpose rather than circumstance—guidance changes what a situation is for rather than promising the outcome you wanted. His function is entirely one of communication and teaching: He reinterprets everything you have made into a learning device, translates your symbols into meaning, and looks beyond all forms into eternity.

T-12.V The Sane Curriculum acim.org/acim/en
A sane curriculum begins when you resign from self-teaching, choose the Holy Spirit as Teacher, and let invulnerability undo the self-attack that keeps brothers unequal.
As you read, notice how the themes Decision and Holy Spirit appear in this section.
Consider Decision
Decision is treated here as the retained power to choose a different learning aim and a different Teacher. The ego’s curriculum is described as a choice for not learning, yet the section insists there remains something you truly want to learn—and you are able to learn it because the choice is yours. The practical turning point is to give up being your own teacher.
This resignation is not defeat; it is sanity. You stop trusting self-directed goals that have failed and give undivided attention to an undivided goal. Choosing the Teacher who knows the way makes opposition irrelevant, because the purpose has changed. Decision becomes the start of a sane curriculum: learning peace.
Consider Holy Spirit
This stop speaks directly to learning. The mind that tried to teach itself has turned itself into a poor learner, and it needs a Teacher and a Resource beyond its own conflicted curriculum. The Holy Spirit is presented as true strength and as the necessary Teacher, with His Love contrasted against divided, personal love.
Self-directed learning fails because it is built on a split purpose. The Holy Spirit offers a sane curriculum—unambiguous and consistent—suited to your condition. Following Him is the practical way to learn the way to God, not through forceful self-improvement, but through steady direction that reduces confusion and restores confidence in a single goal.
Reflect
What goal am I trying to learn under that secretly opposes peace?
Where do I insist on teaching myself, and what fear arises when I consider letting the Holy Spirit’s curriculum set the pace and meaning?
Practice
For 60 seconds, resign as your own teacher: admit you do not know the way. Ask the Holy Spirit to set one goal for today—peace—and to show you the next step. Commit to that single goal when distractions arise.
Choose one area where you feel confused. Say, “Holy Spirit, teach me this in Your way.” For a minute, release the demand to understand everything now. Accept the first simple thought that brings ease as today’s lesson.
