Understand the Motifs
Defenses: Devices of the separated mind that protect illusions rather than truth—always producing the very harm they claim to prevent, and replaceable only by the Atonement, which cannot be misused.
Defenses: Defenses are the mind’s attempt to preserve the illusion of separation by attacking what might threaten the belief in the illusion itself, yet every defense backfires by reinforcing the split it seeks to conceal. All defenses rest on the false premise that you are separate and vulnerable, and each appears to protect you while actually imprisoning you in the very fear you seek to escape. The ego’s defensive system is circular: it creates problems to solve, manufactures threats to defend against, and uses constant vigilance to hide its insane foundation. Under the Holy Spirit the same defenses are gently reinterpreted, becoming means of healing rather than of self-destruction.
Cause and Effect: The fundamental law of reality in which thought is cause and experience is effect, making the mind the sole level of causation for all that you perceive and undergo.
Cause and Effect: Cause and effect operates as an inviolable law: what you think determines what you perceive, experience, and believe to be true. The mind is the only causative agent; the body, the world, and external circumstances are effects without independent causal power. This reversal—the ego’s confusion that the world or body causes your experience—puts the world in charge and leaves you a body trying to cope, yet recognizing your causal power frees you to choose differently. Through understanding projection, decision, and the causal chain from thought to world to perception, you learn that you alone have given the world its meaning and can therefore withdraw that meaning and assign it anew.

T-5.VII The Decision for God acim.org/acim/en
The section gathers the Course’s method into one move: notice the lack of peace, admit a wrong decision, and let the Holy Spirit decide again for God.
As you read, notice how the themes Defenses and Cause and Effect appear in this section.
Consider Defenses
Two layers of defense are linked here. The ego defends its own existence by excluding you from Atonement, while personal defensiveness arises because you believe in sin and therefore expect attack. If you think punishment is deserved, guarding yourself feels reasonable.
The Course turns defensiveness into a signal rather than a strategy. When you notice it, you are being shown the choice you have made. You can choose again. Dropping the defensive posture is not weakness; it is willingness to let correction occur where it must—within the mind itself. Instead of treating defensiveness as proof you are right, treat it as proof you believe you could be condemned. Include yourself in Atonement, and let innocence—not argument—be your safety.
Consider Cause and Effect
This stop makes responsibility unmistakable and usable. Whenever you are not wholly joyful, it is traced to a reaction without love—a choice the mind already made. Lack of peace is therefore evidence of a wrong decision, not evidence that someone else caused your state. Because you caused the experience at the level of mind, you can undo it at the same level. The decision to choose again becomes a practical step rather than a slogan: you withdraw the reaction and let the Holy Spirit handle the consequences that seemed to follow from it. The effect is not just a better mood; it is a loosening of the ego’s claim that your reactions are inevitable. Peace returns as the natural result of choosing a new cause.
Reflect
What do I believe about myself that makes me expect attack and therefore defend?
What reaction am I defending, and what would it feel like to let it be undone at the source?
Practice
Next time you feel defensive, treat it like a dashboard light: ‘I believe in sin right now.’ Pause and say, ‘I choose again for God; include me in Atonement.’ Let your body relax while you accept a different Teacher.
Bring to mind one moment you lost peace today. Admit: ‘I chose this cause.’ Ask the Holy Spirit to undo the decision and take over its effects. Then choose one loving thought toward whoever or whatever you blamed.
