Understand the Motif
Holy Spirit: The Communication Link that connects God with His Sons in their separation, dwelling in the part of the mind between ego and spirit, speaking only to call you back to truth, to healing, and to remembering what you are.
Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is a Thought of God shared equally with all the Sonship: the Mind of the Atonement that bridges the gap between perception and knowledge. He is perfectly trustworthy, conflict-free, and unwaveringly vigilant for joy. Unlike the ego, which speaks first and always in judgment, the Holy Spirit answers quietly, never commanding or demanding, instead gently reminding you of what you already are. He does not act unbidden, since He will not override your choice; He answers only when invited. What He corrects is meaning and purpose rather than circumstance—guidance changes what a situation is for rather than promising the outcome you wanted. His function is entirely one of communication and teaching: He reinterprets everything you have made into a learning device, translates your symbols into meaning, and looks beyond all forms into eternity.

T-17.V The Healed Relationship · Paragraphs 2-3, 6-7, 11 acim.org/acim/en
Once invited, the Holy Spirit changes the relationship’s goal.
As you read, notice how the theme Holy Spirit appears in these paragraphs.
Consider the Context
A relationship changes the moment it is actually offered. The Holy Spirit’s entrance is not tentative; once invited, His goal replaces the old one at once. What follows may feel uncomfortable, but the discomfort is not evidence that the invitation failed. It is the strain of an old structure adjusting to a new purpose.
Trust becomes the main practice. The Holy Spirit has already answered. He does His work by purifying what He accepted and by overlooking the mistakes the ego wants to use as proof that healing is impossible. Cooperation and gratitude keep the relationship aligned with His goal.
There is an immediacy to this stop that many students need. The Holy Spirit does not enter a relationship tentatively once it is truly offered. His goal replaces the old goal at once. That does not mean the forms of the relationship instantly look peaceful. In fact, the section explicitly allows for distress because the relationship’s old structure may still reflect the previous purpose. Disturbance is not failure. It is often evidence that a new goal has begun to expose the old one.
This is why trust is so important here. If you measure the Holy Spirit’s presence by the disappearance of all discomfort, you will be tempted to withdraw your invitation as soon as old patterns surface. The section says the opposite. What He accepted will be purified. That means His answer is already in place, even while the relationship is learning to reflect it more consistently.
The Holy Spirit’s way of working is also very different from the ego’s use of mistakes. The ego seizes every misstep as proof that joining is impossible. The Holy Spirit overlooks mistakes in the sense that He refuses to turn them into identity or destiny. He keeps the relationship aligned with the new goal through faith, appreciation, and cooperation. That is a demanding mercy. It asks you not to run at the first sign of friction, but to recognize friction as the rubbing away of an old use. If the relationship was truly invited into His care, then the answer to strain is not retreat. It is renewed trust in the goal He already placed there.
Reflect
How do I mistake relationship strain for failure instead of recognizing the Holy Spirit’s new goal at work?
Practice
In a tense relationship moment, say, “Holy Spirit, Your goal has already entered here.” Then refuse to use the next mistake as evidence against healing. Let patience be your part.
