The ego’s evaluation feels familiar because it has been rehearsed: “How am I doing? How do I compare? What have I earned or lost?” This stop answers with a different standard. The Holy Spirit does not evaluate you by outcomes or appearances. He evaluates by what you are, and therefore His evaluation is stable. That stability is the antidote to the ego’s oscillation between pride and shame.
His looking with love reflects a law of perception that is easy to test. What you look for, you see. When the ego looks for guilt, it finds evidence everywhere—including in you. The Holy Spirit looks for innocence and shared interest, so He sees a different world. Because both evaluations are present in the same mind, you experience them as competing teachers. The Course asks you not to perfect the ego’s evaluation, but to withdraw belief from it.
Judging beliefs by their source is a practical skill. A thought can feel persuasive and still be meaningless if it comes from fear. When you submit a belief to the Holy Spirit’s criterion—does it come from God or from the ego?—you stop debating content inside the ego’s closed system. You change the teacher instead.
Accepting Atonement becomes the peace-maker here, because Atonement is the acceptance that separation and its guilt are not true. The ego resists that because it lives on self-judgment. The Holy Spirit offers a gentle replacement: you are not what the ego says you are. Choosing His evaluation is not self-improvement; it is releasing a false verdict and letting the mind rest in truth.
Reflect
What belief about myself am I accepting because it feels familiar, and what happens when I submit it to the Holy Spirit’s evaluation instead?
Practice
Bring one harsh self-judgment to mind. Ask, “Holy Spirit, what is the source of this thought?” Wait briefly, then let His evaluation—quiet worth and innocence—have the final word for today.
