The ego prefers a salvation story with credentials: you climb, you improve, you finally deserve peace. This section offers a different tone. The step into the forgiven world is presented as the greatest accomplishment in God’s plan of Atonement, yet it is given, not mastered. That combination is deliberate: it honors the importance of the shift while removing the ego’s ownership of it.
A step given complete and wholly perfect is a strong corrective to spiritual self-reliance. It implies that true perception is not assembled from your scattered efforts. It is received when the mind is willing to stop insisting on its own interpretation. Atonement is the context for this receiving because Atonement corrects the belief that you are separate and therefore must solve salvation privately.
This also clarifies what learning means in the Course’s sense. You do practice, you do choose again, you do offer the instant. But the content of salvation is not produced by practice. Practice is the removal of interference. When interference is removed, what is given can be accepted. So the forgiven world is not an achievement that proves your discipline; it is the natural result of accepting correction.
In everyday terms, this can shift your relationship to impatience. The ego wants proof, milestones, and guarantees that you are progressing. Here, you are reminded that the plan of Atonement is already complete. Your part is to be willing to take the step when it is offered—even if it feels small, even if it feels like only a moment of quiet. Receiving that moment without self-judgment is already participation in God’s plan.
Reflect
Where do I treat forgiveness as something I must master, rather than a gift I can receive within God’s plan of Atonement?
Practice
For one minute, stop trying to do forgiveness perfectly. Say, “This step is given.” Let yourself receive a quieter perception of one situation, as if the Holy Spirit has already prepared it for you.
Understand the Motif in Context
Atonement: The undoing of error and the correction of the belief in separation, revealing that the separation from God never truly occurred and that the Son of God is eternally guiltless.
