Understand the Motif
Love: Love is the one real emotion: all-encompassing, changeless, and the fundamental power of creation that extends itself infinitely. It cannot be learned, only recognized and allowed.
Love: Love is the actual substance of reality, the creative force that gives being to everything. It is whole and indivisible, admitting no part, no exceptions, and no absence; where it appears to be missing, fear has simply obscured it from perception. Love has no opposite because only what is partial and limited can be opposed, and love is without limit. What the ego calls love—clinging, sacrifice, jealousy—can be recognized by the fact that it turns into hate when its terms are not met; what is real does not change. It is freedom, strength, and the only real basis for relationships and communication, for it is the joining of minds beyond form.
Notice the Shift
When it comes to secrecy, right-mindedness invites you to shift:
Consider the Context
Secrecy is named as incompatible with a holy relationship. Love is treated as open sharing with no hidden parts, contrasted with idols that hide in darkness and cannot return love. When the mind keeps secrets, it is protecting the ego’s private self and using the relationship as a hiding place, not as a temple of the Holy Spirit.
This stop also exposes how the body gets used as a weapon. Love does not seek power through relationships, and it overlooks bodily idolatry that tries to get love. Love’s approach can feel threatening to idolaters because it dissolves the seeming safety of their private temples. The section ends with a receiving image: Love’s Arms open to give lasting peace.
This is a milestone because it takes the teaching about specialness into a very concrete form: secrecy. The ego survives by keeping a private corner it will not offer to correction. Secrets preserve a separate identity. They also preserve idols—substitutes for God—that must be kept in the dark to seem valuable. Love, in contrast, is described as wholly loving and therefore wholly open. It cannot live with secrecy because secrecy is a decision against joining.
The holy relationship is pictured as a temple of the Holy Spirit, which means it is meant for presence, not concealment. When you keep hidden thoughts, you are not “protecting” love; you are protecting the ego. The relationship then becomes a place to bargain for safety and to hide from exposure. Love’s approach feels threatening in that state because Love overlooks the body and dissolves the value of the idol. The idol cannot return love, so the ego clings to it and calls the clinging devotion.
The section’s statement that love does not seek power through relationships is a piercing correction. Power-seeking is the ego’s use of relationship: control the other, secure agreement, get reassurance, prove worth, punish withdrawal. The body becomes a weapon when it is used to manipulate, seduce, withhold, or threaten. Love has no use for that weapon because Love does not need to get. Love extends.
This does not mean you must confess everything to everyone. It means you must not keep anything hidden from the Holy Spirit. The primary openness is internal: you stop maintaining a dark room in the mind where grievances, fantasies, or guilt are protected. When that room is brought to light, the relationship becomes serene and undisturbed—not because bodies behave perfectly, but because the mind is no longer divided against itself.
The ending image of Love’s Arms open is a reminder that Love is not an interrogation; it is a welcome. When you drop secrecy, you are not losing yourself. You are being received by peace. Bring one secret thought to the Holy Spirit today and let it be included. That is how the temple becomes open, and how lasting peace is accepted.
Reflect
What secret thought do I keep because I believe it protects me or my relationship from Love’s light?
Practice
Choose one hidden thought you’ve been protecting. Offer it privately to the Holy Spirit and ask for light instead of secrecy. Notice the relief of being received rather than defended, even if only for a few breaths.
