Understand the Motif
Time: An illusion made with the separation and used by the ego for delay, holding the past over the future and postponing the one decision that would end it. The Holy Spirit uses time only to make time unnecessary through the miracle and the holy instant.
Time: Only eternity is real, and time contradicts it. The entire span of time occurred in a single tiny instant that was immediately answered by God’s Correction, making all of time already over. What feels like living through time is the mind reviewing what has already gone by, and it reviews by choice: the instant it chooses against joining, it chooses time again. The ego uses time to compound guilt and preserve the past by making it determine the future—and above all to delay, since staying inside the review is how it avoids the one decision that would end time. Delay is a choice rather than a fact, and it survives by looking reasonable: postponement passes for patience, and a grievance held passes for discernment. The Holy Spirit uses time to render the need for time unnecessary, emphasizing the present as the only aspect that extends to the infinite. The miracle collapses intervals of learning, which shortens time, and the holy instant stands outside time entirely, free of past and future.
Notice the Shift
When it comes to relationship in time, right-mindedness invites you to shift:
Consider the Context
The motif becomes explicitly relational here. Time can imprison when the mind drags past and future into the present, forcing continuity where none is inherently required. It can release when the present is allowed to stand alone. The key application is brother-perception: you cannot truly see another while remembering him through the filter of what he was.
That makes time a relational issue, not just a private one. The miracle needs an opening in the present. Whenever continuity is forced through memory and prediction, the opening closes. To let the present stand free is to stop using time as a weapon against encounter and to let a brother be seen without the chain of his history.
This occurrence takes the teaching of the prior milestone and places it squarely in relationship. Time is shown as a structure that can either imprison or release depending on how the present is used. The ego enforces continuity by carrying the past into the present and then extending the same pattern into the future. That continuity feels sensible, but in Course terms it is the mechanism that blocks miracle.
The reason is simple and profound: a miracle requires an unoccupied present. If the mind is already filling the present with remembered offenses, established roles, and anticipated outcomes, then there is no space for reinterpretation. The brother is not being met. He is being compared to an image. The relationship is therefore not occurring now, even though bodies may be together.
This is why the section says truth is only in the present and that the present in some sense remains when time is gone. The present is prior to the ego’s timeline. It is the point at which the mind can stop enforcing continuity and permit a new perception. The ego experiences this as threatening because its entire identity structure depends on continuity. If a brother can be seen without his past, then I too can no longer rely on my own history to define what is happening.
The imprisonment of time is therefore not in clocks. It is in remembered identity. I keep myself and others bound by insisting that past interpretation must govern present seeing. Release comes when that insistence is withdrawn. The mind no longer uses time to make old conclusions seem objective.
Practically, this occurrence is exacting. It asks whether I want to meet my brother or merely my memory of him. The answer is disclosed not by lofty intention but by what I carry into the encounter. If I carry the past, time imprisons. If I let the present stand alone, time releases.
That is why this stop matters so much. It translates the motif from metaphysics into immediate forgiveness. Time is no longer an abstract framework; it is the medium through which I either keep my brother chained or allow him to be born again in my sight.
Reflect
Whom are you still seeing through an old conclusion that leaves no room for a present miracle?
Practice
Think of one person and say: I will not use your past to see you now. Hold that intention for a few breaths before your next contact with them.
