Understand the Motif
Perception—Knowledge: Perception is a temporary, learned, judgmental interpretation subject to fear or love, while knowledge is certain, total, and timeless—differing fundamentally in nature, though perception can ultimately transfer to knowledge.
Perception—Knowledge: Perception depends on separation, judgment, and selectivity; knowledge requires none of these. Perception is variable and specific, involving comparison and interpretation; knowledge is invariable and whole, admitting no partial aspects or comparisons. The mind chose to perceive when it chose separation, and perception was born from the need to interpret a divided reality. Knowledge cannot be taught, only its conditions prepared, which is why the curriculum works entirely on perception. The Holy Spirit bridges perception and knowledge, not by destroying perception but by transforming it toward truth until perception becomes so holy that its transfer to knowledge occurs naturally.

T-10.II The Decision to Forget · Paragraphs 1-3 acim.org/acim/en
Dissociation trades remembered knowledge for dream awareness.
As you read, notice how the theme Perception—Knowledge appears in these paragraphs.
Consider the Context
The motif is now explained through forgetting. Knowledge must come first, because dissociation is described as the decision to forget what was known. In that exchange, dream awareness replaces knowledge and fear attaches to the substitute. This is a strong Course move. Fear is not rooted in reality, but in the perceptual replacement for reality. The Holy Spirit retains knowledge of God and of you, while your part is willingness to accept and remember. Even accepting truth in this world is presented as a perceptual counterpart to creation in the Kingdom. So the bridge is still active, but its purpose is remembrance, not achievement. Notice the difference between strainful “progress” and gentle remembering: strain usually signals that the ego is trying to manufacture knowledge instead of letting the Holy Spirit restore it.
Reflect
What dream substitute have I accepted instead of remembrance?
Practice
Notice one fear-colored perception today. Tell yourself it may be a substitute for what was known, and ask to remember instead of defend it.
