Understand the Motif
Time: An illusion made with the separation and used by the ego for delay, holding the past over the future and postponing the one decision that would end it. The Holy Spirit uses time only to make time unnecessary through the miracle and the holy instant.
Time: Only eternity is real, and time contradicts it. The entire span of time occurred in a single tiny instant that was immediately answered by God’s Correction, making all of time already over. What feels like living through time is the mind reviewing what has already gone by, and it reviews by choice: the instant it chooses against joining, it chooses time again. The ego uses time to compound guilt and preserve the past by making it determine the future—and above all to delay, since staying inside the review is how it avoids the one decision that would end time. Delay is a choice rather than a fact, and it survives by looking reasonable: postponement passes for patience, and a grievance held passes for discernment. The Holy Spirit uses time to render the need for time unnecessary, emphasizing the present as the only aspect that extends to the infinite. The miracle collapses intervals of learning, which shortens time, and the holy instant stands outside time entirely, free of past and future.

Consider the Context
This is one of the trail’s clearest teachings on time’s double use. The ego fills time with past and future in order to avoid the present. It turns the now into a mere transition, interprets encounters through old images, and keeps grievances alive by stretching continuity across the mind. The Holy Spirit uses the same framework differently: as a temporary teaching device whose goal is to make time unnecessary.
The practical center is unmistakable. Only now offers access to healing, holy encounter, and salvation. Time has no meaning apart from the purpose assigned to it. Used by the ego, it protects identity stories. Used by the Holy Spirit, it becomes a way of releasing the future by accepting correction in the present.
A major milestone occurs here because the motif reaches one of its fullest formulations. Time is described as a mental framework with two opposing purposes. The ego uses the past to populate the future and uses both to keep the present empty. The present then becomes nothing but a corridor between grievance and anticipation. In that corridor, no real encounter is possible because everyone is being met through remembered images rather than through living vision.
This is one of the Course's most practical descriptions of how the ego works. It does not merely remember the past. It uses the past to interpret what is happening now and to forecast what must happen next. That continuity feels stable, even intelligent, but it actually functions as a defense against the present. The ego fears the present because the present is where reinterpretation can occur. If now is allowed to stand cleanly, the entire chain of identity, hurt, and expectation begins to weaken.
The Holy Spirit’s use of time is completely different. He does not deny that the student experiences sequence. He repurposes sequence as a teaching device with a disappearing goal. Time is used to learn what makes time unnecessary. This is a beautiful Course paradox. The classroom remains for a while, but only to lead beyond dependence on the classroom.
The statement that now is the closest you can come to eternity while still in time is crucial. The present is not made into Heaven, but it is recognized as the only doorway within perception through which the mind can accept correction. Healing must occur now, because only now is not already stuffed with old meaning or displaced into imagined outcomes. The future is freed when the present is no longer being used to continue the past.
This also guards against a misunderstanding of practical planning. The Course is not forbidding ordinary temporal thought. It is exposing the ego’s use of temporal thought to avoid presence. The question is not whether you remember or anticipate. The question is whether memory and anticipation are being used to prevent real contact now.
So this occurrence is a central turning point. Time becomes transparent as purpose. It will either defend the ego from the present, or it will serve the Holy Spirit in restoring the present to its healing function. Nothing in the motif is more practical than that.
