Understand the Motif in Context

Love: Love is the one real emotion: all-encompassing, changeless, and the fundamental power of creation that extends itself infinitely. It cannot be learned, only recognized and allowed.

Your task is to extend Love where lovelessness seems to teach.

Go Deeper

This occurrence gives the Love motif a mission-like quality without turning it into activism of the ego. If God’s Love is perfect and leaves no one unworthy, then your role in the world cannot be to reinforce guilt. Your role is to let Love appear where lovelessness seems to rule. That is a very different assignment from trying to improve the ego’s world on its own terms.

To love in a loveless place sounds poetic, but it is deeply practical. A loveless place may be a conflict, a memory, a self-judgment, a relationship, or an institution of thought built on blame. The ego says such places prove guilt is the final truth. Atonement says the blameless Son can be offered there instead. This does not deny painful form. It changes the content you are willing to teach through it.

The section’s link between Love and giving is important too. God knows by giving. The ego knows by comparing and acquiring. When you extend Love, you are participating in God’s way of knowing rather than the ego’s way of measuring. That is why Love is not exhausted by giving. Giving is how it is recognized.

For practice, notice one setting that feels dry, hard, or habitually condemning. Ask what message you are teaching there. Then choose again. Offer one interpretation that leaves room for innocence. You are not asked to fix the whole form at once. You are asked to let Love, not guilt, be the content you extend.

Reflect

Where does my world look loveless, and what message of guilt am I tempted to teach there?

Practice

Bring one discouraging situation to mind. Ask to become willing to offer the blameless Son there instead of the ego’s verdict, even if only in your thoughts.
