Understand the Motif
Communication: The synonym for creation itself, through which mind joins with mind in perfect sharing, and the Holy Spirit’s fundamental function to restore the communication that guilt and separation appear to have disrupted.
Communication: Communication is the essence of creation and the primary language of reality, in which minds touch minds through extension rather than interference. God communicates Himself into existence by creating beings like Himself; you communicate through creating and extending what you are. The ego’s aim is to break this sharing: it uses words and silence alike to manage distance and secure specialness, and offers the body as proof that you are sealed within a border where thought stops at the skin. The body can carry a message but never supply meaning, so words and gestures only approximate what is meant and must be interpreted; minds need no interpreter and communicate perfectly. The separation appears to have disrupted this perfect channel, yet the Holy Spirit remains as the Communication Link that connects God with His Sons in their separation, restoring the knowledge that you are never truly alone or cut off from your Source. True communication requires transparency, the willingness to hide nothing, and in that openness the holy instant arises, where guilt loses its power and minds join in the recognition of their shared oneness.

Consider the Context
Communication reaches a major practical summit here. The holy instant is defined as perfect communication: open to receive, open to give, with no private or hidden thoughts kept apart. Minds are already in communication, so the obstacle is not lack of access but the wish to preserve secrecy. Purity is therefore redefined in a liberating way. It is not the absence of mixed or fearful thoughts. It is the refusal to keep any thought hidden from the Holy Spirit. The holy instant arrives where concealment ends. Communication becomes perfect not because the mind has manufactured perfection, but because it stops defending privateness against shared light. Seen this way, the holy instant is a usable choice in any moment: relax the grip on one private thought and let shared peace replace private management.
The first half of the trail reaches a practical summit here. The holy instant is presented as perfect communication. That immediately gathers together many earlier teachings: minds are already joined, hiddenness blocks awareness, private thoughts interrupt communication, and openness to the Holy Spirit restores what was never actually broken.
The most liberating clarification is the redefinition of purity. The ego hears of perfect communication and assumes that impure thoughts must first disappear, as though the mind must scrub itself clean before joining is possible. The Course says something very different. Purity is not achieved by never noticing darkness. It is achieved by refusing to keep darkness private. The barrier is concealment, not mere content. A thought loses its power to disrupt when it is not defended as a secret possession.
This also transforms the holy instant from a mystical event into a concrete practice. To receive and give without reserve means relinquishing the wish for a separate mental territory. The mind is willing to let everything be brought under one interpretation. Because minds are already in communication, the only effort required is the undoing of resistance. The holy instant is less an attainment than a lapse in defensiveness.
The relationship implications are enormous. Loneliness, alienation, and spiritual distance are traced back to private thinking. Not private in the ordinary social sense, but private as the ego uses the term: thoughts held apart from shared light and used to preserve separate identity. Once that structure is questioned, communication is recognized as naturally present.
So this occurrence stands as a major anchor because it turns the motif into a direct invitation. Do not wait to become flawless. Hold back nothing from the Holy Spirit. Perfect communication begins where the mind no longer insists on being privately itself.
