Understand the Motif
Temptation: The wish to make illusions real, to remain in suffering and accept a false identity, presenting itself as an attractive alternative to truth and freedom.
Temptation: Temptation targets the decision-making mind by making the wrong choice appear attractive and the right choice seem costly. Its central teaching is that you are a body, born to die, constrained by physical limits, subject to sickness and decay, and that this narrative is your real identity. All temptations are identical in content despite their varied forms: they are attempts to convince you that you are weak, miserable, and defenseless, and that guilt is self-protective. It is not met by resistance, since wrestling with temptation grants its premise and casts you as the opponent of something unreal. Yet temptation is one more opportunity to choose again; every place where you raised a false self-image can become the place where true identity prevails.

T-18.III Light in the Dream · Paragraph 4 acim.org/acim/en
Don’t snatch faith back—temptation would return you to darkness.
As you read, notice how the theme Temptation appears in this paragraph.
Consider the Context
Temptation is described as the familiar impulse to withdraw the gift of faith and return to darkness. When you have offered trust—toward a brother, toward the process, toward guidance—the ego tempts you to reclaim it, as if letting go will protect you.
This stop warns that yielding only increases fear. Withdrawing faith divides the mind again, and division is experienced as darkness. Recognizing the temptation, then, is part of staying on a joined path out of fear: you keep the gift given and let guidance carry you forward. Keeping faith does not mean you know outcomes. It means you refuse to let uncertainty be interpreted by the ego, and you keep the mind joined to guidance.
Reflect
Where am I tempted to withdraw my trust because I feel uncertain, and what fear do I think that withdrawal will prevent?
Practice
Think of one place you have offered trust. When tempted to retract it, pause and say, “I will not snatch back the gift.” Ask the Holy Spirit to keep your mind joined and let the fear pass.
