The ego is committed to the long road. It tells you that you must become worthy through time: years of preparation, constant effort, gradual improvement. This stop reverses that story by tying release to togetherness. One instant spent truly together—together in purpose, together in willingness—can restore a sense of wholeness that the ego claims must be earned.
Notice what it means to be together in this sense. It is not a demand for physical proximity or emotional harmony. It is a shared instant in which you drop the private defenses that keep you separate: the need to be right, the need to protect an image, the need to keep one grievance untouched. In that instant, you allow the Holy Spirit to use the relationship for a shared purpose. That is why time is saved. The saving is not in minutes and hours; it is the release from the belief that you need time at all to be whole.
The relief of not having to force your way into peace can be misunderstood as passivity. In Course terms, it means you do not need to force healing by the ego’s methods. You do not need to strain, analyze, or fix yourself into peace. You need only stop interfering with what joining already offers. The shared instant provides the context in which you stop doing the ego’s work and allow correction to be given.
A helpful application is to notice where you postpone peace by making it private: “I’ll be peaceful after I resolve this,” “I’ll feel joined when they change,” “I’ll practice later when I’m ready.” This stop invites a different move: choose a single instant of shared willingness now. In that instant, let the universe be restored in your mind by letting nothing be excluded.
Reflect
Where do I postpone peace by believing I need more preparation, rather than accepting a shared instant of willingness now?
Practice
Set a timer for one minute. Bring a brother to mind and let the goal be only: “We are together in one purpose.” Do not analyze, fix, or rehearse. Simply rest and allow the Holy Spirit to use that instant.
Understand the Motif in Context
Joining: The recognition that minds are already united and separation is an illusion, requiring only that you release the space you have maintained between yourself and your brother to realize the wholeness that was never broken.
