Understand the Motif
Specialness: The belief that some parts of the Sonship are inherently different in value from others—projecting hierarchies of worth onto what is actually one and whole.
Specialness: Specialness is the belief that value depends on difference, and it runs in every direction: claimed for yourself, conferred on those you single out for special love, withheld from those you rank beneath you, and finally projected onto God as a Father who loves some more than others. It operates through the constant search for differences by which to measure superior and inferior, and in making difference meaningful it makes enemies of those it excludes and diminishes the one who claims it. It can inhabit anything—a body, a role, a possession, a relationship, a grievance, even spiritual attainment—because no form is too ordinary to serve, and only the demand to be more than another stays constant. Only the deprived can value specialness, since one certain of his inheritance would have no need to be singled out. It promises heaven but delivers isolation, because it builds a kingdom of forms apart from what God created and seals the gates from inside. Specialness is undone when you stop making difference into value. The uniqueness that served as a wall then becomes a special function, given for joining rather than for exclusion.
Notice the Shift
When it comes to the brother, right-mindedness invites you to shift:
Consider the Context
Specialness is portrayed as fiercely defended devotion: a wish to make difference into truth and obey it as law. The ego pours reverence into the special self and uses the body and perception to hide doubt and make hate look lovely. You can feel the cost as tension and vigilance. Yet the section offers a reversal: the tribute given to specialness actually belongs to your brother’s holiness, and it returns to you when you recognize it in him.
Perception is not bound to specialness except by choice. A different purpose can undo the whole investment. What looked like loyalty to yourself is revealed as loyalty to fear, because it must constantly hide the shared truth.
Reflect
Where do I demand reverence or special recognition, and what doubt am I trying to cover with it?
Practice
Notice one moment you want to be seen as exceptional. Pause and redirect the desire: “Holy Spirit, let me value holiness instead of specialness.” Choose one brother and silently acknowledge one quality of innocence or love you can see in him, even faintly.
