Understand the Motifs

Guilt: The ego’s foundation: the self-condemnation that follows from believing you have actually attacked God and separated from Him—the verdict that punishment is deserved. It makes the ego possible and Heaven impossible.

Projection: The misuse of mind’s creative power of extension in which you attempt to disown content within yourself and place it outside, making the world appear to be the cause of your inner condition rather than its effect.

Projection hides the dreamer until cause and effect is restored: choose the Holy Spirit, let guilt dissolve, and the nightmare becomes a forgiving dream that leads toward waking.

As you read, notice how the themes Guilt and Projection appear in this section.

Reflect

What outside cause do you cling to so you don’t have to face the guilt you denied in your own mind?

Where do I insist someone else is the cause of my anger or pain so that my wrath can seem justified?

Practice

Pick one upsetting situation and say: “I have been dreaming with guilt.” Ask the Holy Spirit for a forgiving dream instead, and rest a few breaths in the willingness to let the cause be corrected in your mind.

When you feel wronged, pause and say: I will not make the cause outside my mind. Holy Spirit, show me the choice I am making now, and help me choose peace instead of victimhood.
