Understand the Ego Trap

Idols as Buffers

“I need something between me and whatever punishment is coming. If I can stay occupied, attached, or in control, maybe I won't have to face what I deserve.”

Watch Your Mind

Wrong-mindedness: The wrong mind watches for signs of penalty everywhere, then clings to idols, substitutes, and compulsions as protection from the judgment it expects.

Right-mindedness: The right mind watches for the feared sentence underneath the idol, because the dream thins when the judgment, not the substitute, is brought to light.

Carry This With You

Nothing you reach for can protect you from a sentence you made up.
