Ground Yourself in the Section
T-4.IV This Need Not Be acim.org/acim/en
Need and heaviness are re-framed as ego-effects; choosing again with vigilance opens the Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation, restoring Christ’s vision, healing, and joining.
Separation: The belief that it is possible to be apart from God: one that never became fact but generates an entire system of thought centered on the ego, guilt, and the perception of an isolated, fragmented world. It is the root of all suffering and the source of everything that requires healing.
Notice the Ego's Pattern
Separation is expressed here as a literal split in mind. To deny that mind is one with God is to hold the ego together, and the section names this through the contrast of higher and lower mind. The terminology can sound structural, but its purpose is corrective. It shows the student that the conflict is not between body and spirit as separate substances. It is a matter of allegiance within mind. The ego survives through division, while the Holy Spirit remains the sign that division is not complete. Separation is therefore maintained by what the mind continues to identify with and obey. The recognition that this need not be gives you a practical permission: you can drop the divided stance right where you notice it.
Reflect
Where do I still try to keep peace and private separateness at the same time?
Practice
Notice one divided motive in your mind. Say, I do not have to keep both allegiances. Then offer the conflict to the Holy Spirit without trying to negotiate terms.
Joining: The recognition that minds are already united and separation is an illusion, requiring only that you release the space you have maintained between yourself and your brother to realize the wholeness that was never broken.
Receive the Correction
Joining is presented as uniting with the Teacher so the ego can be shined away. Instead of watching for danger on your own, you accept a shared purpose that makes the ego’s vigilance pointless.
The section also frames a collective movement often called the Second Coming: not a dramatic event in the world, but a shared return to sanity in the mind. You are asked to join that movement rather than treat healing as a private project. As sanity is restored, joining with your brother in the Teacher’s name becomes natural. The promise of invincibility is about purpose—when the goal is shared and healed, the ego has no leverage.
Reflect
Where do I still rely on ego vigilance, as if safety depends on staying separate and managing everything alone?
Practice
When you feel yourself bracing against someone, pause. Inwardly choose the Teacher’s interpretation instead of the ego’s. Ask: “Show me the shared purpose here.” Let one defensive thought drop, and notice the quiet sense of being accompanied.
