T-5.V The Ego’s Use of Guilt acim.org/acim/en
Guilt is unmasked as the ego’s engine of fear and punishment, and a simple decision for the Holy Spirit and Atonement restores innocence, peace, and creation.
Recognize What's Happening Beneath
Underneath the many symptoms, the section exposes a hidden bargain: the ego wants guilt because guilt seems to prove that separation happened and must have consequences. Once that premise is protected, a punishing God, a fearful world, and self‑punishment can all look like facts, while the mind avoids the only real question—what interpretation it is choosing.
The quiet invitation is to withdraw that investment. Accepting Atonement is the willingness to let the impossible crime be reclassified as error, and to let the past be purified rather than carried forward. In that shift, healing becomes a condition of mind, miracles become natural, and the present becomes the place where peace is recognized, not earned.
Reflect
What part of you still expects punishment if separation is let go, revealing an investment in guilt as proof that the ego’s story is real?
Practice
Take one minute. Notice any fear about consequences. Say inwardly: “Guilt is the ego’s symbol, not my reality.” Ask the Holy Spirit to undo the belief that separation deserves punishment, and rest in willingness to accept Atonement now.
