T-6.IV The Only Answer acim.org/acim/en

The ego’s questions and defenses keep separation real, while the Holy Spirit’s Answer restores certainty by returning cause to the mind and reuniting perception with Love’s changeless reality.

Ego: The ego is the self you believe yourself to be once separation is taken as true: a false identity built on guilt and fear that uses attack and judgment to preserve itself. It is a delusional thought system erected to defend that identity, with no power except what you give it through belief.

Notice the Ego's Pattern

The ego is described as the first speaker that raises questions but cannot provide answers, beginning with the first question about identity and launching doubt. Its core mistake is failing to recognize it is not part of you, which makes it fear the mind that could undo it simply by seeing the truth. From that fear, it justifies attacking its maker, seeks allies rather than brothers, and aligns with the body as its partner.

Ego reasoning is exposed as an attempt to make an impossible situation seem possible. The section’s answer is not better reasoning, but a shift to the Teacher who can end doubt rather than multiply it.

Reflect

What first question starts my doubt and sets the tone for how I see myself and others?

Practice

When you notice the ego speaking first, don’t answer immediately. Take one breath and ask the Holy Spirit for an interpretation that reduces fear. Let your next choice come from that quieter answer.

Holy Spirit: The Communication Link that connects God with His Sons in their separation, dwelling in the part of the mind between ego and spirit, speaking only to call you back to truth, to healing, and to remembering what you are.

Receive the Correction

Questions born of fear are met here with a single Answer. This milestone frames the Holy Spirit as the one response to the ego’s endless questioning and doubt. He may not be the first to speak, but He always answers truly, so the answer is available now rather than postponed into the future.

His guidance is described as restorative and non-coercive: He brings you home and never commands, because commanding would assume inequality. The content of His answer is your identity as God’s child and your reality in the Kingdom—an answer that makes the ego’s questions meaningless. When you accept that Answer, you are not collecting information; you are relinquishing the need to ask from fear at all.

Reflect

What question am I using to postpone peace, and how might it dissolve if I let the Holy Spirit answer from identity rather than from fear?

Practice

Take one nagging question and hand it to the Holy Spirit. Wait for a simple statement of identity or safety, then repeat that statement once as your answer instead of returning to analysis.
