The Lessons of the Holy Spirit

Understand the Motif

Separation: The belief that it is possible to be apart from God: one that never became fact but generates an entire system of thought centered on the ego, guilt, and the perception of an isolated, fragmented world. It is the root of all suffering and the source of everything that requires healing.

Reflect

How am I still using the body today as proof of isolation, vulnerability, or private identity?

Consider the Context

Separation becomes highly practical in this occurrence. The body is called a separation device because it symbolizes the mind’s belief in being distinct, vulnerable, and apart. Yet the same symbol is not discarded. The Holy Spirit repurposes it as a learning device against separation. That is one of the Course’s most important reversals. The problem is never the body in itself, but the purpose assigned to it. The section also links separation with valuing another kingdom and expecting attack and rejection. The three lessons of the Holy Spirit are offered as a retraining of those assumptions, so that what once served division can begin to serve healing. These lessons become daily training: shifting from getting to giving, from defensive peace to shared peace, and from vigilance against others to vigilance for the ego’s thoughts.
