The Only Real Relationship
The Holy Spirit uses forgiveness and the Holy Instant to release the search for completion through special relationships and restore awareness of the shared relationship with God.
Motifs in this Section
Oneness
The singular reality that all being shares in God, where what appears separate is illusory and what is truly real admits no division, hierarchy, or difference of any kind.
Completion by Bargain | Only God’s relationship with you is real; all joining flows from it.
The ego teaches that relationship is scarcity. It says you must find the right person, secure the right bond, and protect it from loss. Underneath is the fear that you are incomplete and can fail to be loved. This section answers by moving relationship to its true level. The only real relationship is God’s relationship with you. That does not mean other relationships are meaningless in form. It means their meaning comes from what they reflect: the one relationship that cannot be broken.
From that foundation, relationship becomes cosmic rather than private. The universe is described as God’s creation in which all parts are joined through Christ. Christ, in Course usage, is the shared Self of the Sonship. Joining through Christ means joining in identity, not in bodies. The loneliness the ego defends is therefore a mistake about where relationship is. If you look for completion in a private pairing, you will feel threatened by separation. If you accept completion in God, you are no longer trying to get it from someone.
The section’s treatment of failure is a direct undoing of ego shame. Failure only makes sense for a separate self trying to achieve worth. The Son is complete and beyond failure because worth is not achieved; it is given in oneness. Nothing the Son truly wills can be denied because true will is shared with God’s Will. This is not a promise that all personal plans will succeed. It is a statement about identity: what you truly are cannot be denied.
The practical instruction—relate only with what cannot be left—redirects your attention in every relationship. When you feel needy, anxious, or bargaining, ask yourself what you are relating with: a body, an image, an outcome? Or the shared love that cannot be lost? To relate with what cannot be left is to meet the brother in the one relationship with God, where completion is already true. This is how special relationships are transformed. They are not improved by getting more from someone. They are healed by shifting the foundation from private need to shared oneness. In that foundation, others can find you, because you are no longer hiding in separation.
“If the right person or outcome would finally stay, I would be complete. Until then, relationship is mostly negotiation and fear of loss.”
“Completion is not obtained from a bargain because it was never absent from God’s relationship with you. Others are met truly when they are no longer asked to complete you.”
Where do I seek completion from a person or outcome instead of accepting it in God?
Bring to mind one relationship you use for completion. For one minute, affirm: my only real relationship is with God, and it includes this brother. Ask to meet them in what cannot be lost, not in what must be negotiated.
Holy Spirit
The Communication Link that connects God with His Sons in their separation, dwelling in the part of the mind between ego and spirit, speaking only to call you back to truth, to healing, and to remembering what you are.
Sacred vs Ordinary | Everything can be used for release by one Teacher.
The Holy Spirit is described here as a Teacher who wastes nothing. That is a profound reassurance, because the ego’s story is that the world is full of useless errors, ruined situations, and missed chances. The Holy Spirit uses everything in the world for one purpose—release. Any sign of willingness, no matter how small, becomes material for teaching because He is not trying to preserve the world. He is trying to free you through it.
This is why forgiveness is redefined as release rather than deprivation. The ego hears forgiveness as loss: something will be taken, some grievance relinquished, some protection surrendered. The Holy Spirit teaches the opposite. What is given up is only the burden. Since He understands the communication problem the mind made, He can use the very forms of communication that once reinforced separation to teach joining instead. He keeps the channel open precisely where the mind believed it had broken it.
The fact that only one relationship is real deepens that logic. The Holy Spirit joins what seems split by removing disagreement in meaning. He uses every part of the world that can serve this lesson until the holy instant extends beyond time. That means no encounter is spiritually irrelevant. No relationship is outside the classroom. If it can be used for release, the Holy Spirit will use it. The practical invitation is therefore broad and immediate: stop sorting life into sacred and ordinary zones. Offer all of it. Release is learned when the whole world is placed in service of one Teacher.
“This part of life is too ordinary, messy, or worldly to matter spiritually. Real release belongs somewhere else, not here.”
“Nothing is outside the classroom when one Teacher is using everything for release. The ordinary becomes holy by purpose, not by appearance.”
What ordinary part of my life do I still think the Holy Spirit cannot use for release?
Choose one mundane task or concern. Offer it with, “Holy Spirit, use this for my release.” Then do it without hurry and without making it about proving anything.
Holy Instant
The holy instant is a moment of experience freed from the past and future where judgment is suspended, guilt vanishes, and God is remembered. It is the closest you can come to eternity while still in time, and it is always available now.
Peace as Episode | The Holy Instant extends: learning continues until it becomes all.
Students can misread a powerful glimpse of peace as a finish line: I had it once, so why am I not permanently there? This stop corrects that confusion without compromising the goal. The Holy Instant is indeed outside time, but while you still value time as real, the mind needs gentle training. That training is what the Holy Spirit provides.
The Holy Spirit’s role as Teacher remains until the content of the Holy Instant extends beyond the moment you first experienced. Extending does not mean stretching a peak experience across minutes and hours. It means letting the purpose of joining spread into more situations. Each time you choose the Holy Spirit’s interpretation over the ego’s, the content of the Holy Instant is carried forward, and time becomes a means rather than an obstacle.
The phrase make it all there is points to preference. The ego wants peace on its own terms—peace plus specialness, peace plus private grievances, peace plus control. The Holy Instant becomes stable as those preferences are relinquished. That relinquishment is never private. You want it to be all there is because you recognize a shared need: you and your brother cannot be at peace separately.
So the pedagogy is compassionate: do not use your current inconsistency as evidence of failure. Use it as a cue to choose again. The Holy Spirit remains with you precisely because you are learning to let one purpose replace many.
A helpful way to work with this is to identify the moment you come down from peace. What thought entered? Often it is a small preference: I want to be right, I want to be safe in my way, I want this person to change. Rather than judging yourself, you can bring that preference to the Holy Spirit as the next lesson. In this way the Holy Instant becomes training in consistency: the Teacher remains until you are willing to let one purpose govern all the little moments that used to feel separate.
“That was a nice moment, but now I'm back in real life. Peace comes and goes, and I shouldn't expect it to shape everything.”
“The Holy Instant is not lost because learning continues. What matters is whether its purpose is being extended into what comes next.”
After a moment of peace, what do you tend to choose next, and what helps you let that Holy Instant extend into the next situation instead of stopping as an episode?
Recall a recent quiet moment, even a brief one. For one minute, choose to value its content again by letting your next thought be for joining, and ask the Holy Spirit to carry that same purpose into your next task.
Joining
The recognition that minds are already united and separation is an illusion, requiring only that you release the space you have maintained between yourself and your brother to realize the wholeness that was never broken.
Exclusive Holiness | The only real relationship calls everyone out of loneliness.
This stop takes the idea of holy relationship and protects it from becoming exclusive. The relationship is called real precisely because it does not close in on itself. If it is holy, it calls everyone to escape loneliness and join in love. That is a decisive correction to the ego’s version of intimacy, which always depends on a boundary against someone else.
The section also goes cosmic: all parts are one in God through Christ. That vision keeps the interpersonal teaching from collapsing into psychology. The only real relationship is real because it participates in a reality that is already joined. The pair does not create the union. The pair reflects it.
The Holy Spirit’s function is beautifully described here as joining what seems impossible to reconcile by removing disagreement. That is not compromise. It is a deeper correction. Disagreement at the level of ego interpretation is not solved by better negotiation alone. It is solved by returning the relationship to a shared purpose. Once purpose is one, much of what seemed irreconcilable loses its foundation.
This occurrence is especially useful when a relationship feels like ours in a possessive sense. The ego loves that phrase. It wants sacredness without inclusiveness. But holiness cannot be possessive. If your peace in the relationship depends on other people being excluded, the relationship has been reassigned to specialness. The only real relationship opens. It does not leak love away; it reveals that love was never private to begin with. Joining becomes trustworthy precisely because it cannot be stolen or lost.
“This relationship is precious because it is ours. If it opens too wide, we lose what makes it sacred and uniquely meaningful.”
“What is holy opens rather than closes. The relationship becomes real by calling others out of loneliness, not by defending itself against them.”
Where do I still want a relationship to be holy for me by making it exclusive against others?
Take one treasured relationship and offer it to the Holy Spirit with this willingness: “Use this to include, not exclude.” Then let one thought of possession be replaced by gratitude for shared, not private, love.
Sonship
The one Son of God, in whom all individuals share a single identity—eternally whole, perfect, changeless, and incapable of separation from the Father. It is the self that belongs to you and to God, and it is your salvation.
Loneliness as Self | The only real relationship ends loneliness by restoring the whole Sonship.
The ego interprets relationship in bodily terms: who is with me, who is not, who stays, who leaves, who meets my needs, who disappoints me. From that framework, loneliness and failure seem inevitable because the basis is unstable from the start. This occurrence expands relationship beyond that cramped field. The Sonship itself is God’s gift to you, ensuring perfect creation. In that light, the only real relationship is not between isolated selves, but between Father and Son and all that relationship includes.
This makes loneliness easier to reinterpret. Loneliness is not fundamentally absence of company. It is misidentification with a separate self. When the mind thinks it stands alone, then even being surrounded by others does not end the ache. Sonship answers the ache at its source. The holy host of God is not alone because its very being is shared. The same is true of failure. What God’s Son truly wills with God cannot fail, because it arises from creation rather than from the ego’s plans.
The section’s widening to include the whole universe is also significant. It dissolves the habit of reducing relationship to a private emotional arrangement. What belongs to the Sonship belongs within the field of shared relation. That does not make your human relationships irrelevant. It frees them from carrying a load they were never meant to bear.
A practical question is: when I feel lonely, what am I assuming I am? Usually the answer is some separate figure needing completion from outside. Bring that figure to the Holy Spirit. Let Him remind you that the only real relationship is already given and cannot be broken. Then notice how that changes the quality of your interactions. You no longer ask bodies to solve metaphysical loneliness. You begin to let each relationship point back to the shared belonging that was present before the world’s substitutes ever arose.
“I am alone because what I need isn’t being met by the people around me. My failure to connect says something true about me.”
“The ache is real as experience, but it is not evidence that you stand alone. What feels missing is the shared relation you forgot, not a private completion you lack.”
When I feel alone or like a failure, what false identity am I accepting instead of the Sonship?
When loneliness appears, say, “I am not alone in God’s Will.” Let the Holy Spirit widen your idea of relationship beyond one body or one role.
Creation / Extension
The outpouring of being itself through giving, in which to create is to extend what you are and thereby increase without loss, while remaining joined to your Source.
Preferred Circle | Nothing created is excluded from you; the Sonship is the real relationship.
Special relationships feel compelling because they seem to offer certainty in a world of uncertainty. But specialness is built on exclusion: this one matters, that one doesn’t; this bond is “mine,” that one is outside. This stop dismantles the basis for specialness by describing creation as God’s extension with no withholding. If God withheld neither Himself nor His creation, then nothing created is excluded from you. Exclusion is not protection; it is the thought of separation.
This is why the Sonship is called the only real relationship. It is not a vague spiritual group; it is the shared Identity of all minds as God’s one creation. The Sonship is given to ensure perfect creation—meaning extension remains whole and is not fragmented into private islands. Relationship, in this view, is not a contractual arrangement between separate selves. It is the recognition of what is already shared.
The mention that your creations call to you adds an interesting nuance. Your creations share your will, which suggests that extension is not random. What you extend is aligned with your true will, and it remains part of you. The ego fears this idea because it has trained you to see giving as loss. But if nothing created is excluded, then giving is not a surrender; it is a return.
Practically, this stop asks you to notice where you exclude. Exclusion can look like indifference, like contempt, like the decision that certain people don’t count. It can also look like private spirituality—keeping God for me and not for everyone. Each form of exclusion blocks the experience of the only real relationship.
A simple practice is to widen your circle in mind. You do not have to force intimacy with everyone; you are asked to withdraw the belief that anyone is outside the Love of God. When you include the overlooked, the irritating, or the distant in your willingness to see innocence, you are accepting the Sonship. And in that acceptance, you experience the quiet relief this stop promises: what is yours in God cannot be reduced, because nothing created is excluded.
“Some people matter, some don't. Real relationship has to stay selective or it loses depth.”
“Preference can organize form, but exclusion cannot define reality. The Sonship is the relationship that makes every lesser circle sane.”
Which relationship do I still treat as special—excluding the rest of the Sonship from my heart and my sense of shared Identity?
Think of someone you overlook. For a minute, include them in your mind: “Nothing created is excluded from me.” Let the Sonship be your relationship, not a private pair. Notice how inclusion feels more stable than preference.
Communication
The synonym for creation itself, through which mind joins with mind in perfect sharing, and the Holy Spirit’s fundamental function to restore the communication that guilt and separation appear to have disrupted.
Answering the Mask | The Holy Spirit keeps the exchange open inside confusion.
The movement here is deeply reassuring because it explains why divine help is possible without pretending that confusion is real. God does not understand your communication problem in the sense of participating in it. He does not share separation, misunderstanding, or conflicted need. If He did, He would not be God. Yet this does not leave the separated mind unanswered. The Holy Spirit keeps the channel open precisely where the problem seems to be.
That distinction matters. The ego wants either a God who enters confusion on confusion's terms or no help at all. The Course offers something subtler and kinder. The Holy Spirit understands the error because it was made within the dream, and He can therefore translate it without ever granting it truth. Communication is preserved not by lowering God into confusion, but by raising confusion into reinterpretation.
The practical effect is enormous. Every form of need, conflict, or seeming incompatibility can be met differently. The response is not based on surface appearance alone. The Holy Spirit teaches you to answer as God answers: from love, without defensiveness, and without mistaking form for cause. That means communication becomes a school in perception. You are learning not merely how to speak, but how to recognize what is actually being asked.
This also explains why disagreement can be undone. The ego assumes incompatibility must be managed by negotiation between separate interests. The Holy Spirit joins what appears irreconcilable by showing that the underlying content has been misread. Once the false interpretation is lifted, what seemed opposed can be seen within one purpose.
So the motif grows more merciful here. The open exchange between God and the Son has not been lost, yet it is made useful inside confusion through a Teacher who understands the problem you made without sharing its premise. Communication becomes an active means of healing because the right Interpreter remains present within the very place where misunderstanding seemed to begin.
“This situation is exactly what it looks like, so I have to respond to the surface. If I don't manage the form, everything falls apart.”
“The form reports confusion, but it does not explain it. The call beneath it can be met without joining the error.”
What form of need do I still answer at the surface only?
Bring one confusing situation to mind and ask, Show me the call beneath the form. Let the Holy Spirit teach you a response that does not join the confusion.
Forgiveness
Forgiveness is the release of guilt through the recognition that what seemed to be sin never actually occurred: looking beyond error rather than making it real and then pardoning it.
Fear of Release | Forgiveness is release, not loss; it dissolves the fear blocking salvation.
The Text has already exposed how the ego uses relationships as contracts. Now it goes one layer deeper: it names why we resist forgiveness even when we want peace. The resistance is fear. The ego predicts that if you forgive, you will lose something important. Often the something is not a person; it is an identity built from grievance—being the one who was wronged, the one who is morally superior, the one who must stay guarded. Forgiveness threatens that identity, so the ego calls it dangerous.
This stop corrects the fear by redefining forgiveness. Under the Holy Spirit’s teaching, forgiveness is release. It is the dropping of a heavy mental weight: judgment, resentment, vigilance, self-attack. The ego calls that “loss” because it confuses pain with possession. It clings to grievance as if grievance were protection. But what is actually being released is only the belief in guilt and threat.
The link to salvation is very practical. Salvation, in Course terms, is the mind’s return to peace through correction. If the mind is terrified of forgiveness, it will resist correction and keep choosing the ego. So addressing the fear is essential. When you recognize that forgiveness is release, willingness increases. You become more open to complete forgiveness, which means not keeping a protected exception where guilt must remain real.
Absolution can also be misunderstood. It does not mean the ego is granted permission to continue attacking. It means the mind is freed from the belief that sin is real. You are absolved because guilt is not the truth of you, and your brother is absolved for the same reason. This is why the sense that there is nothing to forgive is paired with release: it points to the recognition that what you were defending against was an illusion.
For practice, notice the fear itself. When you think of forgiving, what do you predict will happen? Name the predicted loss. Then ask for reinterpretation: “Show me how this is release.” As the mind experiences even a small reduction in burden, fear loosens, and forgiveness becomes attractive. Salvation feels less like a demand and more like a gentle homecoming.
“If I really forgive, I'll lose something I still need—my reason, my edge, maybe even the relationship itself.”
“What falls away in forgiveness is only what weighs on you. Release feels risky only while pain is still being counted as treasure.”
What do I think I would lose if I truly forgave, and can I recognize that this fear is the ego’s attempt to keep me bound to grievance?
Name one grievance you fear releasing. Say, “Forgiveness is release for me.” For one minute, feel the predicted “loss,” then imagine setting down a heavy weight and being absolved. Let the Holy Spirit show you the difference.
Will of God
The eternal, unchangeable intention that the Son have everything, know peace, remain free, and extend creation: an intention that cannot be opposed or defeated and is identical with the Son’s deepest will.
The Impossible Case | What seems impossible must be possible when our shared Will meets God.
The ego wields impossibility as a weapon. It says peace is impossible here, forgiveness is impossible with this person, healing is impossible in this situation. When you accept that verdict, you accept the ego’s authority and you remain trapped in its conclusions. This stop offers a direct correction: God’s Will guarantees possibility. If God’s Will is for joining and peace, then impossibility cannot be the final word.
The section’s language of a shared need and will that God and His Son meet together relocates the problem. The deepest need is not for a particular outcome; it is for union. The deepest will is not private preference; it is the shared will to meet—God meeting you, and you meeting Him, in the relationship He created. That relationship is the stable reference point because it is grounded in truth, not in changing perception.
The idea that a will in God’s host cannot be denied reinforces the certainty. Denial is the ego’s strategy: deny love, deny innocence, deny help. But the Will of God is not subject to denial in reality. You may deny it in awareness, but you cannot erase it. That is why the Holy Spirit can be trusted with what seems impossible. He is not trying to make the ego’s plan work; He is restoring awareness of what cannot be denied.
Practically, this means you can stop demanding that you understand how peace will happen. You can bring the impossible to the Holy Spirit and ask for a different purpose. You accept the relationship with God as the only meaningful one, and you let that acceptance reinterpret your other relationships. The result is a growing confidence that joining is not fragile. It is supported by the shared Will that is already there, waiting to be accepted.
“This one is beyond repair. Peace may work elsewhere, but not here, not with this history.”
“Impossible is the ego’s verdict on what it will not release. What is joined to God does not depend on your confidence in form.”
Where have I declared peace or forgiveness “impossible,” and what changes if I let God’s Will be the authority instead of the ego’s verdict?
Bring one impossible situation to mind. Say: “Holy Spirit, I leave the impossible to You.” Then add: “Let me accept the relationship God created with me.” Pause for three breaths and watch for a gentler meaning to appear.
Special Relationship
A relationship that sets one apart from the Sonship, whether as special love or as special hate—functioning as the ego’s primary defense against awareness of God’s equal love for all.
Recovery Through Exception | The holy instant becomes the only relationship that is real.
This stop consolidates a key contrast: specialness seeks to restore wholeness by isolating it. The ego says, “If I can find the right person, the right closeness, the right private haven, then the loss will be undone.” But the loss was made in the mind, so a private solution keeps the mistake intact. It treats separation as fact and then tries to decorate it.
The section’s firmness is helpful. It does not argue that people cannot be close in form; it challenges the belief that closeness must be exclusive to be meaningful. Exclusivity is the ego’s substitute for joining. It promises intimacy while keeping the Sonship outside the door.
The holy instant points to a different foundation. In it, you give up the attempt to get something back from a special partner, and you allow the relationship to be used for forgiveness as correction. That means the relationship’s success is not measured by how special it feels, but by how willing you are to let grievances and comparisons be undone.
Notice the relief implied here: you are not asked to stop caring about someone; you are asked to stop using someone to solve the separation. As that use is released, relationship becomes less a fragile possession and more a classroom where equality is experienced. The holy instant is the moment the classroom begins.
To say the holy instant is the only relationship that is real is to shift level. It means the joining you want is not between two separate selves, but between the mind and the Answer that knows no separation. When you accept that, the partner is no longer the source of wholeness; they are the witness to it. Pressure and drama ease, because you are no longer asking the relationship to prove lack is healed. You are using it to practice letting lack be questioned and released.
“If I can just find the one bond that restores what I lost, I won't feel so empty. This has to be unique or it means nothing.”
“What was lost was never waiting in a private arrangement. The Holy Instant restores meaning by ending the search for completion in exception.”
What am I trying to get back through exclusivity that can only be restored in the mind?
Think of one person you’re tempted to treat as the answer. Gently say, “Let this be a holy instant instead,” and let go of one comparison or demand that makes them special.
Willingness
The small but genuine choice to accept truth, to let illusions go, and to release oneself to the Holy Spirit’s guidance: the sole prerequisite the learner must supply for transformation.
Readiness Threshold | Every small sign of willingness becomes leverage for release.
This occurrence protects students from a common discouragement: “My willingness is too small to matter.” The section’s logic is the opposite. The Holy Spirit does not wait for a flawless mind; He uses whatever willingness you can offer. A token of willingness is valuable because it represents a shift of allegiance. It says, “I do not want the ego’s interpretation as my guide.”
Yet the unit does not treat willingness as casual. It speaks of a great need of your willingness, not because God is lacking, but because you have made yourself seem bound by what you value. The need is the mind’s need to be released from divided purpose. If you treat the Holy Instant as a rare spiritual event, you will keep choosing other purposes most of the time—specialness, grievance, control—and then feel confused about why peace is intermittent.
Striving can be misheard as willpower. Here it functions differently. Striving means sustained preference: you are willing to let the Holy Instant be what you want most, and you are willing to return to that preference when you drift. This is a mind-choice, not a personality achievement. It is also where form/content becomes important. You are not asked to manipulate situations into holiness. You are asked to let every situation be given one purpose, so the content—joining—remains consistent.
In that sense, the only real relationship is not about perfect behavior in form; it is about a relationship used for one goal. When you offer your willingness, the Holy Spirit can use the world and your relationships as the curriculum for that goal. Each small willingness becomes leverage because it allows your experience to be reinterpreted. The more consistently you let willingness lead, the more natural it becomes to hear Him gladly, because you are no longer defending an alternative teacher.
“This tiny bit of openness doesn't count. Come back when you feel more sincere, more certain, more spiritual.”
“Your little willingness is not too small to matter. It is the exact opening through which everything larger can enter.”
Where do I treat the Holy Instant as an exception instead of being willing to make it my guiding priority?
Notice one small sign of willingness you have right now (even a quiet “maybe”). Offer it: “Holy Spirit, use this.” For 60 seconds, let this moment have one purpose only—joining—and watch how your perception begins to simplify.
Love
Love is the one real emotion: all-encompassing, changeless, and the fundamental power of creation that extends itself infinitely. It cannot be learned, only recognized and allowed.
Private Rescue Fantasy | Redeeming Love calls us out of loneliness into one holy bond.
The ego uses relationships to manage fear: find someone, secure their loyalty, and you will not feel alone. Yet the underlying loneliness remains because the premise has not changed. Loneliness comes from believing you are separate. A special bond cannot heal that belief; it can only distract from it.
This section names a different foundation: the Redeemer’s Love. Redemption is not achieved by your personal skill at relating. It is achieved by accepting help from the One Who cannot fail. That phrasing matters because it shifts trust away from the fragile ego-self and toward the Holy Spirit’s certainty. Love is not being asked to depend on human moods, histories, or bargains. It is grounded in the consistency of God.
A relationship this holy also expands the scope. The ego wants a relationship that excludes others: a private refuge. The holy relationship does the opposite. It becomes a call that everyone can answer, because its content is joining, not possession. That is why the section links it with escaping loneliness. Loneliness ends when the mind accepts that it cannot be healed alone and no longer wants a private solution.
In practice, you may notice how quickly you treat love as an arrangement: who will meet your needs, who will stay, who will understand. Those are not wrong concerns in form, but they become traps when they are treated as salvation. Bring the sense of loneliness itself to the Holy Spirit. Ask to let the Redeemer’s Love reinterpret the purpose of relationship from “protect me” to “join with me.” Even a small willingness to let love be inclusive will begin to loosen the tightness of private attachment.
“If I find the right person to stay close, this loneliness will finally break. I just need one bond I can trust.”
“Loneliness is not ended by possession. Redeeming Love heals by making relationship a place of joining, not a shelter from everyone else.”
Where do I protect loneliness by insisting that love must be private or exclusive?
When loneliness arises, pause and admit you want a private solution. Then ask the Holy Spirit to show you the inclusive Love that calls everyone to join, and let one small gesture of openness answer that call.
Fear
The emotion of separation: the anticipation of punishment that guilt makes inevitable. Fear is what keeps the ego’s thought system from being looked at, and it is sustained only by the belief that attack and guilt are real.
Release as Loss | Forgiveness seems frightening only when release is mistaken for loss.
The ego’s version of relationship depends on keeping something: a story, a grievance, a debt, an advantage. So when forgiveness enters, it can feel like threat. The fear is not really about being nice or changing behavior; it is about losing the ego’s internal payoff. If I let go of the grievance, what will hold my identity together? Who will I be without my claim?
This section emphasizes that the Holy Spirit perceives that fear directly. That matters because fear often hides behind spiritualized arguments—“It would be irresponsible to forgive,” or “I’m just being honest.” When the fear is exposed, the correction can be received. Forgiveness is not a sacrifice of what is valuable; it is the release of what hurts. It removes the burden you were carrying and the threat you were projecting.
Notice the key reversal: the ego tries to protect you from redemption. It treats healing as loss and calls bondage safety. The Holy Spirit does the opposite: He protects you from the fear that comes from keeping guilt real. He teaches that redemption does not take anything away except what never brought peace.
Applied practically, this means you do not have to wait until you feel fearless. You can admit the fear of forgiveness honestly—and then let it be corrected. The relationship becomes real to the extent it serves joining rather than specialness. When forgiveness is accepted as correction in the mind, the fear that guarded the grievance begins to loosen.
“If I forgive this, I lose my protection. The grievance may hurt, but at least it tells me where I stand.”
“You are not being asked to lose what protects you. You are being shown that what you hold is the burden, and release restores what grievance concealed.”
What meaning in a relationship do I protect that makes forgiveness feel risky?
Pick one mild grievance. Admit: Part of me fears forgiveness. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how release is gain, and let one tight thought soften without defending it.
Time
An illusion made with the separation and used by the ego for delay, holding the past over the future and postponing the one decision that would end it. The Holy Spirit uses time only to make time unnecessary through the miracle and the holy instant.
Chasing Peaks | Let the Holy Instant extend; time becomes a training ground, not a goal.
When students begin to taste the Holy Instant, the ego can turn it into another form of specialness: a peak moment to chase, compare, and measure. That turns timelessness into an achievement in time, which is exactly the trap the Holy Instant is meant to undo. This stop guards against that drift by placing the Holy Instant inside an ongoing learning process.
Time is described as the span in which learning still seems necessary. That is not a concession to the ego; it is an honest description of how the split mind experiences training. The Holy Instant does not deny that you appear to have habits, relationships, and recurring temptations. It gives you a doorway in each moment. The goal is not to have one timeless experience and then return to time as usual. The goal is extension.
Extension is where time’s purpose changes. When you accept the Holy Instant and then extend its content—joining, forgiveness as correction, and shared innocence—time stops being a container for postponement. It becomes a practice setting. That is why the Holy Spirit remains Teacher until the Holy Instant extends far beyond time. The interval before then is not a countdown; it is acceptance becoming stable.
This also corrects the temptation to think the Holy Instant should remove all learning. The Holy Spirit meets you where you believe you are. If time still seems necessary, it can be used for the only purpose that makes it unnecessary: repeated present choices for joining. Each time you choose again, you are extending the Holy Instant a little farther through the day.
So the practical move is to stop asking, “How do I get out of time?” and start asking, “How do I extend this instant?” When extension becomes your aim, time loses its status as a destination and becomes a tool that quietly fades from importance.
“That calm moment was special, but it's gone now. Real life is back, and I'll just have to wait for another deep experience.”
“The Holy Instant is not a trophy you lost. Its purpose is fulfilled when its joining is carried into the next moment you think is ordinary.”
Do I treat the Holy Instant as a peak experience to get, or as something to extend through ordinary moments of choosing again?
Recall one moment today when you felt calm or joined. Ask the Holy Spirit how to extend that quality into the next interaction. Take one small step—one forgiving thought—and let that be extension in time.
