Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Specialness. Named as a substitute for Love, specialness requires difference, demands judgment, and manufactures enemies. It searches for lack in your brother, turning a potential savior into a measuring stick. It needs guilt—if your brother were truly sinless, specialness would lose its foundation, because innocence makes difference meaningless.

  2. Forgiveness. Forgiveness is defined as the end of specialness. Clinging to even one cherished illusion makes it seem unforgivable and turns it into sin. Forgiving God is included—not because God did anything, but because the ego has made an image of God as enemy. To forgive God is to release the belief that God is the cause of your imprisonment.

  3. Will of God. Specialness is the secret vow against Love—the defended wish to have something for yourself alone. God’s Will is incompatible with specialness, and the ego turns this into a drama of alien wills, whispering that joining will require your disappearance and calling that whisper self-protection.

  4. Will of God. The correction is unexpectedly tender: neither you nor God wills the death of love. God cannot attack illusions; Love waits for you to lay them down. God is portrayed as asking your forgiveness—not because God has sinned, but because the grievance against God must be released if shared Will is to be experienced as joy. The ego’s rebellion is exposed as self-attack.

  5. Sin / Error. Specialness manufactures special sins—hidden exceptions designed to keep separation safe. Partial forgiveness becomes a polished way to keep guilt while looking kind. The world’s justice depends on the whole structure of victims, payment, and punishment; the Course turns justice back to love by insisting correction is the only fair outcome.

  6. Salvation. Salvation cannot be compromised. You cannot keep a small corner of attack and still know peace—if attack is kept, salvation would inherit the ego’s violence. Specialness is the wish for different laws for you, a solo rescue preserving distance. The brother holds the key to Heaven; the idol of specialness cannot save you both. The real question is whether you want to see your brother innocent. Salvation is the decision to let innocence be what you look upon.

  7. Idols. When idols enter relationship, joining becomes bargaining—a sealed economy of scarcity where secrets are kept because idols cannot share. The unholy instant is the instant of offerings to idols; against it, the Holy Instant appears as a change of aim where nothing is being used to get something back. Specialness is named as an idol—power-by-comparison that seems to grant more while taking your peace.
