From the Motifs’ Teachings

From each motif's Teachings, the teachings and reversals that draw on this section, in the order of the motifs' salience here. Many draw on other sections too, listed beneath them.

Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Sin / Error. Specialness manufactures special sins—hidden exceptions designed to keep separation safe. Partial forgiveness becomes a polished way to keep guilt while looking kind. The world’s justice depends on the whole structure of victims, payment, and punishment; the Course turns justice back to love by insisting correction is the only fair outcome.

  2. Cause and Effect. After the reversal, cause and effect becomes immediate: what you decide about yourself determines the world you perceive. Forgiveness as your choice makes the world look forgiving; invulnerability accepted in mind makes the world seem less dangerous. The motif is not offered as a technique to engineer preferred outcomes but as an undoing of the ego’s habit of putting causality outside.

  3. Altar. The ego’s altars of sacrifice are exposed, especially in the special relationship, where suffering is treated as the price of union and an altar erected between two bodies substitutes bargaining for joining. Yet an altar is a dedication: what was given to sacrifice can be given to forgiveness by a change of purpose.
