Motif Charts for Guilt
Each chart below looks at the motif from a different angle, and they're meant to be read in order. The Spiral shows the whole journey at a glance. The next six track where the motif appears, how strongly, and how its key moments are paced across the Text. The last three show how it's taught, which motifs travel with it, and where it sits among all the motifs.
The Spiral Staircase
Why this chart matters: It gives a fast overview of the motif's full journey, so first-time readers can see where the theme returns and where key turning points occur. Its shape follows Dr. Kenneth Wapnick's image of the Text as a spiral staircase, where each return brings the reader back to familiar ground, but higher.
How to read this chart: Start at the center (earlier chapters) and move outward (later chapters). Each dot is one stop; highlighted symbols mark Seed, Milestones, and Zenith. Hover for details and click key moments to open the highlighted occurrence on the motif trail.
Motif Presence and Intensity
Why this chart matters: It shows both spread and strength, so you can see not only where the motif appears, but where it carries the most weight.
How to read this chart: Left to right tracks where stops fall from Chapter 1 to Chapter 31. Taller bars mean stronger emphasis at that stop. Use Color mode to switch between key-moment colors and salience-tier colors.

The Motif Ascent
Why this chart matters: It shows how the motif builds over time, so you can see the overall climb instead of reading each stop in isolation.
How to read this chart: The line moves through stops in order. Upward movement means stronger overall emphasis so far. A dip means that stop is lighter than the one just before it, even if the long-term pattern still rises.

The Motif Thread
Why this chart matters: It condenses the full motif trail into a single timeline, which matches the thread style used in Section > Motifs cards.
How to read this chart: Each dot is one stop in reading order. Highlighted dots mark key moments. Hover any dot to see chapter, section title, and key-moment details.

Key-Moment Cadence
Why this chart matters: It reveals the rhythm of major turning points, including whether key moments are tightly clustered or spread far apart.
How to read this chart: Nodes are key moments and links show the gap between them. Longer links mean more sections between moments. Seed and Zenith are key meaning points, but milestones can appear before or after either one.

Novelty vs Salience Timeline
Why this chart matters: It separates reinforcement from new movement, so you can see when the motif is repeating known themes versus adding something fresher.
How to read this chart: Higher dots are more novel and bigger dots are more salient. The middle guide line helps you quickly scan above-versus-below-mid novelty.

Chapter Density (Lollipop)
Why this chart matters: It shows where the motif clusters by chapter, so you can spot dense stretches, lighter stretches, and changes in emphasis across the book.
How to read this chart: Each chapter has one lollipop marker. A "stop" means one motif occurrence in one section, and a chapter can contain multiple stops. Use the Metric menu to switch what the marker height represents.

Controlled Code Mix (Ranked Rails)
Why this chart matters: It shows how the motif is taught, not just where it appears, by revealing the dominant teaching voice and framing patterns around it.
How to read this chart: Each rail is one teaching-code category. The percentage is the share of this motif's stops that use that code. Longer bars and higher values mean that code is more characteristic of this motif.

Top Companions
Why this chart matters: Companions reveal more than which motifs cluster together—they expose which one carries the other. A one-way dependency says a motif rarely appears without its companion; a mutual pairing says neither leads.
How to read this chart: Each section groups companions by direction. Under [Motif] depends on, the bar is the share of this motif’s sections in which the companion also appears. Under Depends on [Motif], it flips—the share of the companion’s sections in which this motif appears. Under Mutual, the two are close in both directions and the bar shows the average.

Corpus Role Matrix (Tercile-Normalized)
Why this chart matters: It shows this motif's overall role relative to all other motifs, based on how widely it appears and how strongly it is emphasized.
How to read this chart: Each dot is one motif. Left-to-right shows how broadly it appears across the Text; bottom-to-top shows how strongly it tends to be emphasized when it appears. The 3x3 layout groups motifs into low, medium, and high bands on both axes so you can quickly compare role categories.
