Holy Instant
Teachings of Holy Instant
What the Trail Teaches
-
The ego’s basic use of time is to keep separation continuous: memory becomes a weapon, anticipation becomes a bargain, and the relationship becomes a stage for the old script. The Holy Instant is a pastless present—the closest approach to eternity you can accept while you still think you are living in time. Holy meeting happens here when you stop filtering your brother through what you think you already know.
-
Finding the present means looking on your brother now without consulting prior reactions. The present is still and changeless—the rare moment when you do not need to defend yourself because you are not interpreting through an old wound. When you call forth truth in your brother now, you receive a witness that you are not your past either. The Holy Instant is a relational undoing.
Trail stop T-13.VI -
The Holy Instant must be shared. You cannot accept it for yourself and keep it from your brother, because its purpose is to undo the belief that your peace can be separate from his. It is offered on the scale of one second—one tiny interval given wholly to the Holy Spirit, not partly, not with a grievance protected in the corner.
-
Doubt ends by ending divided allegiance, not by collecting evidence. The ego’s most spiritual-looking defense is postponement: after I understand more, after I become calmer, then I will be ready. The Holy Instant refuses delay. It asks you to give over your plans for salvation—those scripts meant to rescue you without surrendering separation.
Trail stop T-15.IV -
The Holy Instant is defined in terms of communication: an open mind willing to receive and give without concealment. The ego’s secret thoughts are the hidden altar where grievances and special fantasies are protected. Concealment is separation; if you want joining, you cannot keep a corner of the mind pledged to isolation.
-
Specialness depends on history—contracts, debts, comparisons, scarcity. In the Holy Instant the reference point shifts from personal narrative toward God as the only Reference: changeless Love that does not rank. Sharing brings gain without loss; the logic of sacrifice begins to look insane. Guilt loses its attraction because its purpose—disrupting communication—is absent when communication is restored.
-
The Holy Instant becomes a bridge when guilt still attracts and the old bargain still calls. It is the direct opposite of vengeance: the past is treated as gone, so retribution loses its footing. A striking metaphor: a miniature of Heaven set within time. The instruction is to focus on content—joining, innocence, peace—not the time-frame.
-
Little willingness replaces effort. The Holy Instant is easy and natural—difficult only when you believe there must be more you have to do. This diagnoses two ego traps: arrogance and unworthiness. Both keep salvation in the future. Orders of difficulty collapse: one relationship is not harder than another; those rankings are the ego’s way of keeping time meaningful as struggle.
Trail stop T-18.IV -
The Holy Instant becomes a crisis protocol inside relationship. You are not asked to clean up guilt first and then approach peace. You pause and ask for this instant to be exchanged. Either partner’s willingness brings it to both. Beyond the body does not mean against the body—the instant reads as a gentle melting into safety where bodily urgency fades without attack.
-
What looks like many holy instants are in truth one. The Holy Instant never changes; nothing comes before it and nothing comes after it. You are not collecting beautiful moments like souvenirs; you are learning to stop using time as reference. In the Holy Instant, the faith and forgiveness you imagine you will someday offer are already given because the instant is shared and complete.
Trail stop T-20.V -
The unholy instant is the moment you value an idol and separation feels precious. The Holy Instant is the alternative: a safe return from the idol to peace. Fear must have a present cause, and the Course locates that cause in dread of joining. If the cause is present, the cure is present. The miracle stands in present grace.
-
The teaching arrives finally in a gesture small enough to miss: pause before you answer your brother. Let what you thought you heard be set aside. Old images fall away, and a different response becomes possible—one that comes from joining rather than defense. You do not have to make the instant or deserve it; you have to stop interfering long enough to let it be given.
