Understand the Motifs

Willingness: The small but genuine choice to accept truth, to let illusions go, and to release oneself to the Holy Spirit’s guidance: the sole prerequisite the learner must supply for transformation.

Decision: Decision is the one remaining freedom and power, the continuous choice between two fixed alternatives: truth or illusion, love or fear, God or the ego. Every decision is made at the level of mind and determines what you perceive.

Responsibility for sight gathers decision, cause and effect, and willingness into one practice: choose the Holy Spirit, withdraw judgment, and let vision replace victimhood.

As you read, notice how the themes Willingness and Decision appear in this section.

Reflect

What do I think it would cost me to accept correction right now, and am I willing to admit I may be wrong about that cost?

What goal am I choosing that guarantees the feeling I am experiencing right now?

Practice

Name one grievance or demand you’ve placed on your inner altar. For 30 seconds, imagine leaving the altar empty. Say, “Holy Spirit, I am willing to accept correction. I was wrong to think this cost is too high.” Let the urge to defend the grievance soften.

In a moment of upset, ask, “What goal am I serving—guilt or peace?” Then offer the decision by asking the Holy Spirit to make the choice for God on your behalf. Let your next thought be guided by the gentler goal.
