The Responsibility for Sight
Responsibility for sight gathers decision, cause and effect, and willingness into one practice: choose the Holy Spirit, withdraw judgment, and let vision replace victimhood.
Understanding This Section
The voice here leans toward correction, though grounded in explanatory context. The contrast between both thought systems provides the primary lens.
This section operates at the practical level, focused on the work the learner does within experience. The abstraction is psychological, working through inner processes: fear, guilt, projection, and resistance.
The teaching is primarily directed at the learner’s own mind, perception, and inner choice.
Setting the Stage
Helplessness is brought into focus as a mistake about causation: the habit of treating a situation, a body, or another person’s will as the source of what you feel and see.
The section answers that habit with a gentler responsibility—returning cause to the mind’s choice of purpose and Teacher—so vision becomes possible without self-blame.
The Threads That Meet
Decision and cause-and-effect lock together as the organizing thread: the goal you choose quietly sets the interpretation, and the interpretation produces the experience you then call “evidence.” Faith names the engine behind this—where you invest trust is what you will perceive as real.
Against that backdrop, the ego’s method is exposed as magic and idolatry: reversing cause and effect, installing another will on the inner altar, and defending the authority problem that tries to be self-made. Judgment keeps the system running by insisting on certainty and rightness.
The Holy Spirit, willingness, and the Holy Instant provide the practical reversal: suspend judgment for an instant, leave the altar unoccupied, and accept the exchange of worlds as recognition rather than manufacture. Salvation then becomes functional—changing purpose—and it naturally extends into joining and Sonship, where peace cannot be private and no relationship is excluded from healing.
Key Moments
A clear hinge is the restoration of cause and effect: responsibility is reframed as power, and the mind is invited to stop arguing with effects and bring the presumed cause to correction.
From that hinge, several decisive applications unfold—dropping judgment to sustain the Holy Instant, withdrawing faith from idols and magic (external causation), and letting a little willingness carry the whole shift—until joining becomes the natural proof that sight has changed.
Beneath the Surface
Under the surface, the pull is toward a private will: the wish to be self-authored, to keep a protected corner of specialness, and to use the world as a witness that separation is justified.
The section gently undoes that bargain by insisting that God’s Will is shared, creation is unchanged, and peace increases as soon as you let your interpretation be questioned; the cost is not loss, but the end of the story that needed you to be a victim.
