Looking Within

Looking within shifts everything: the mind’s decision invites a world of witnesses, and projection is undone by choosing the Holy Spirit, letting miracles return love, peace, and healing.

From each motif's Teachings, the teachings and reversals that draw on this section, in the order of the motifs' salience here. Many draw on other sections too, listed beneath them.

Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Decision. The Course reverses the usual order. The world says: first something happens, then you feel, then you decide what it means. The Course says the meaning came first—the purpose was set before the outcome. The willingness to step away from beliefs that make you unhappy is the motif’s most usable thread.

  2. Projection. The law of witnesses shifts projection from moral failure to decision: you look within first, choose a guide, and then look out and find witnesses to that choice. The world is an answering echo, not a neutral field. If you made the invitation, you can withdraw it; if you chose the teacher, you can choose another. This is empowerment, not self-blame.

  3. Judgment. Mind-reading—treating your interpretation of another’s motives as fact—is where judgment becomes painfully ordinary. The Holy Spirit’s judgment is not kinder sentencing but the undoing of sentencing: accept loving thoughts as true, and read everything else as a call for help. Personal judgment is not your function, and its release is the relief of not knowing.

  4. Death / Suffering. What God creates cannot suffer and cannot end—not offered to shame you for hurting but to pull the bottom out of the belief that suffering is divinely assigned. Unconsciousness—sleep, numbness, death as “rest”—is refused as a false refuge; what you long for is rest from conflict, not annihilation.

  5. Punishment. The world itself becomes the relocated sentence. Death and suffering appear as governing laws of existence, “evidence” that guilt is built into reality. The ego’s ultimate policy is guilt as a death sentence—you are allowed to live only to await execution. Time becomes the delivery system: the past supplies evidence, the future demands payment.

  6. Real World. The Real World is recognized through seeing together—sharing innocence, not agreeing on opinions. It is linked to the present and to a joy without triumph: not the thrill of getting what you want, but the softer feeling of being unthreatened. Perception calls forth witnesses for the teacher you’ve chosen, and when your day feels like a case you are building, it is worth asking what you have been asking sight to prove.
