The Bridge to the Real World
Special love is exposed as guilt and body-identity; the Holy Instant and Holy Spirit become the bridge that turns relationships into shared forgiveness, undoing sacrifice, separation, and delay.

Teachings Drawn from This Section
-
Special Relationship. Specialness needs bodies: separate units that can join in a way that excludes everyone else. Attraction can serve guilt when the body-based definition of union is used to secure identity. The Course ties this to time: the special relationship re-enacts the past through a partner, and what feels like deep intimacy can become vengeance disguised as devotion. You cannot meet the living person while meeting history through them.
-
Holy Instant. The Holy Instant becomes a bridge when guilt still attracts and the old bargain still calls. It is the direct opposite of vengeance: the past is treated as gone, so retribution loses its footing. A striking metaphor: a miniature of Heaven set within time. The instruction is to focus on content—joining, innocence, peace—not the time-frame.
-
Body. The body is the ego’s favorite way to keep minds hidden in relationships. Bodies can be intimate while minds remain guarded behind a face, a posture, a tone. The body is recruited to measure love—presence as proof, absence as rejection—and specialness becomes the judge.
-
Sacrifice. At its most concentrated, sacrifice is tied to defending a separate self. Body-identity is the attempt to trade magnitude for a separate corner. Joining is interpreted as threat because you equate yours with you. Every demand for sacrifice requires separation between Father and Son, as if reality could be portioned out, traded, or withheld—but reality cannot be sacrificed.
-
Littleness. Specialness only appeals to the deprived. Littleness distorts perspective—what is little is magnified, what is strong is cut down. The smallest willingness is not the same as littleness: willingness can be tiny and still be everything because it opens the door to a Power you do not manufacture. Littleness is the conclusion that you are inherently inadequate.
