From each motif's Teachings, the teachings and reversals that draw on this section, in the order of the motifs' salience here. Many draw on other sections too, listed beneath them.

Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Faith. Faithlessness is named as a strategy, not a moral flaw. It shifts the problem away from its source—to bodies, circumstances, histories—treating the situation as external and therefore unsolvable. Faith, by contrast, is the willingness to keep the problem where correction is possible: in the mind’s choice.

  2. Holy Relationship. After the Holy Instant, the old structure strains back into place. Discomfort is inevitable when the goal reverses. The ego reads discomfort as proof of failure and urges retreat. The Course is unyielding: the goal will not be changed back. The stabilizers are gratitude, blessing, and a purpose that widens beyond the pair. Limited faith in your brother makes holiness invisible.

  3. Cause and Effect. Purpose is revealed as the hidden first domino. The meaning of a situation is decided at the beginning, not discovered at the end. Goals organize perception—what you want to see is the cause, what seems to occur is the effect. Persistent lack of peace hints at ambivalence about what you are actually requesting.

  4. Temptation. When a relationship begins to heal, temptation can intensify—the ego offers escape plans to derail the relationship’s rebirth. Faithlessness arrives as counterfeit peace: resignation, numbness, compromise that feels like peace but is surrender to separation. At the edge of fear, the ego whispers that you should decide alone, and the Course names that whisper as temptation.
