Many Forms; One Correction

Every problem is traced back to scarcity and sacrifice thinking, and the Holy Spirit’s correction restores shared innocence—so Love can be remembered without anyone losing.

Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Sacrifice. Seeing your brother as a body is already a sacrifice—you keep the useful part and sacrifice the rest. Sacrifice cannot be isolated: if you accept it for yourself, your brother shares it; the ledger always expands. The correction is intimate: receive your brother as witness rather than judge him. Every problem rests on the demand that someone suffer loss; the Holy Spirit dissolves it by showing a way in which no one loses.

  2. Scarcity Principle. All problems share one root: the belief that loss is possible and can produce gain. Every argument, grievance, and anxious plan is a variation on the same demand—someone must lose so I can be safe. Grievance treats innocence as scarce: for you to be innocent, someone else must be guilty. The Course’s refusal is total: innocence is shared or it is not real. Even the fear of healing becomes understandable—if peace were purchased through someone’s pain, real healing would threaten the entire system of “justice.”

  3. Form—Content. A problem will appear in many forms while it lasts. Trying to solve it in one particular form is pointless, because the aspects that need correction do not change. The ego loves the special case—complexity, timing, uniqueness—because details keep you from making the only decision that would end the cycle. Forgiveness becomes correction when you recognize one underlying choice for separation playing out in different costumes.

  4. Sin / Error. Beneath the many forms is one root error: the belief that something real can be lost. If loss is not real, the entire chain of attack, vengeance, and sin collapses. Sin can be left behind—not punished, not compensated for—and the space it occupied becomes holy again, as if light returns to a room you forgot could be bright.
