The Two Emotions

Fear and Love are set side by side: one builds a private dream through projection, the other is shared through Christ’s vision and the Holy Spirit’s correction.

Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Love. The Course compresses human feeling into two roots: Love and fear. Fear has endless disguises; Love is changeless reality. In a sealed-off world, the ego mislabels fear as love—clinging, sacrifice, jealousy. If what you call love can flip into hate when its terms aren’t met, it was never Love; it was a contract. The oscillation between adoration and resentment is the symptom of believing separation is real.

  2. Fear. Fear builds a world. It constructs a sealed-off inner landscape of unshared meanings that feels convincing precisely because no light enters it. From inside that fortified world, love is misread as threat, and fear can even be mislabeled as love. Projection becomes inevitable—the brother becomes a screen on which fear paints a shadow—and isolation follows. The remedy is shared vision: the door you stop barricading.

  3. Projection. Projection becomes time-travel: shadow figures pulled from the past are painted onto current faces and called reality. The body becomes evidence for separation—guilt is shifted from mind to body so sickness can feel like deserved punishment. Even time itself is recruited: fear is projected onto it, making it feel like an enemy bringing loss and danger.

  4. Separation. The experience of separation becomes exile—homelessness, wandering without a home. The ego’s feverish autonomy interprets dependence as threat and harmony as dangerous. Inner worlds, hidden truths, and secret thoughts become structures of exclusion: the ego’s concept of privacy is always a concept of exclusion. The moment the mind chooses a concealed truth, it has chosen conflict—different truths require different realities, different realities require separation, and separation requires fear.

  5. Wrong-mindedness. In wrong-mindedness you live in an insulated world—hearing only your own voice, unable to truly join. Communication as joining of mind becomes impossible because you use the other as a screen for your own interpretation. The hidden world is self-made, which means it can be unmade by recognizing the choice for isolation and inviting a different Interpreter.

  6. Right-mindedness. Peace becomes the reference point, and the ego’s survival strategy is named: secrecy. The practice is to bring every hidden hurt and feared thought to the Holy Spirit rather than protecting darkness. The very act of bringing weakens the ego’s claim. Everything is divided into two kinds—expressions of love or requests for it—removing personal hierarchies of importance and making miracles equal in content.

  7. Guiltlessness. Beneath the condemned self-image there remains an image of the guiltless Son, undimmed. Guiltlessness is revealed, not made. Practice shifts from striving to become innocent to questioning the guilty self you have been loyal to. Guilt is always tied to the past; when you look through Christ, the present is revealed as unstained and salvation becomes immediate.

  8. Communication. The hidden world is diagnosed as a kind of insanity: the separated mind “communicates” with figures that are not there, hears answers no one else can hear, and ends in total isolation—including deafness to God’s call. Every rehearsed argument and perfected justification addressed to no one is this pattern in miniature.

  9. Real World. The Real World is recognized through seeing together—sharing innocence, not agreeing on opinions. It is linked to the present and to a joy without triumph: not the thrill of getting what you want, but the softer feeling of being unthreatened. Perception calls forth witnesses for the teacher you’ve chosen, and when your day feels like a case you are building, it is worth asking what you have been asking sight to prove.
