Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Time. Time binds tightly to relationship. Holding the past against your brother is using time to maintain separation; grievance is not only about what happened but about insisting that what happened has duration. The correction is simple: keep the present clear, and the future is released from repeating the past.

  2. Holy Instant. The ego’s basic use of time is to keep separation continuous: memory becomes a weapon, anticipation becomes a bargain, and the relationship becomes a stage for the old script. The Holy Instant is a pastless present—the closest approach to eternity you can accept while you still think you are living in time. Holy meeting happens here when you stop filtering your brother through what you think you already know.

  3. Holy Instant. Finding the present means looking on your brother now without consulting prior reactions. The present is still and changeless—the rare moment when you do not need to defend yourself because you are not interpreting through an old wound. When you call forth truth in your brother now, you receive a witness that you are not your past either. The Holy Instant is a relational undoing.

  4. Forgiveness. Forgiveness threads through time by releasing past-based interpretation applied to present encounters. You stop dragging old hurts into the room and calling that reality. When the past is released, the present stops feeling like a rehearing of evidence and becomes a holy encounter. The practice is not to deny that you feel hurt; it is to refuse to make that feeling proof that separation is true.

  5. Miracle. Miracles collapse time by substituting for learning that could otherwise take ages. Accepting correction now stops paying interest on the past. Seeing your brother without his past is concrete instruction: releasing his story releases yours.

  6. Salvation. The ego invents a price for salvation—delayed, purchased with suffering. If love required sacrifice as its cost, killing could become a form of saving. Because the Son of God is guiltless, salvation cannot mean rescue from real sin; it must mean release from a false belief. Time is exposed as one of the ego’s cleanest defenses, turning salvation future so you don’t face accepting it now. The ego seeks salvation through possession; the Holy Spirit offers a glad exchange.

  7. Judgment. Judgment leans heavily on time. To judge the present, you drag the past in as evidence—old slights carried into the relationship like stones in your pocket. Suspend judgment and the frame of reference disappears. In the circle of Atonement, where you place your brother is where you stand with him; exclusion is never one-sided.

  8. Healing. Healing is placed strictly in the present. It cannot occur in the past; it must occur now if the future is to be released. Every hurt and feared thought must be brought to the Holy Spirit. Healing must reach as far as fear does—the ego always wants a pocket of exception, but wholeness cannot be partial without ceasing to be wholeness.

  9. Guiltlessness. Beneath the condemned self-image there remains an image of the guiltless Son, undimmed. Guiltlessness is revealed, not made. Practice shifts from striving to become innocent to questioning the guilty self you have been loyal to. Guilt is always tied to the past; when you look through Christ, the present is revealed as unstained and salvation becomes immediate.

  10. Real World. The Real World is recognized through seeing together—sharing innocence, not agreeing on opinions. It is linked to the present and to a joy without triumph: not the thrill of getting what you want, but the softer feeling of being unthreatened. Perception calls forth witnesses for the teacher you’ve chosen, and when your day feels like a case you are building, it is worth asking what you have been asking sight to prove.

  11. Projection. Projection becomes time-travel: shadow figures pulled from the past are painted onto current faces and called reality. The body becomes evidence for separation—guilt is shifted from mind to body so sickness can feel like deserved punishment. Even time itself is recruited: fear is projected onto it, making it feel like an enemy bringing loss and danger.

  12. Separation. Time becomes a primary accomplice. The past is the story that justifies the gap; if you keep the relationship trapped in old meanings, you keep the present from undoing them. The holy instant is introduced as a refusal to chain yourself and your brother to time—a single second offered to a different Teacher becomes a wedge in the wall. Special relationships are exposed as the ego’s attempt to fit love into separation while keeping the premise intact: love converted into fear through subtle bargains.

  13. Willingness. Healing is accomplished by willingness to join the healed—reversing the ego’s logic that you join once you’re healed. What you accept as true for your brother becomes the truth you can accept for yourself. Willingness and sharing become inseparable; the holy instant is kept by giving it.
