Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Holy Instant. Little willingness replaces effort. The Holy Instant is easy and natural—difficult only when you believe there must be more you have to do. This diagnoses two ego traps: arrogance and unworthiness. Both keep salvation in the future. Orders of difficulty collapse: one relationship is not harder than another; those rankings are the ego’s way of keeping time meaningful as struggle.

  2. Willingness. At the climax, little willingness is made the only personal contribution required. You are explicitly told you do not supply the strength of it. Willingness is defined by what it refuses to do: not to interfere, not to substitute your plan, not to assume the function of purification. The ego’s spiritual self-improvement project is dismantled—your judgment is the problem you’re trying to solve.

  3. Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit asks for very little and gives disproportionately. The holy instant is His gift; your contribution is a minimal opening. Adding extra preparation is the ego inserting itself into His function. This disproportion extends to joining: union accepted by one becomes healing for the other, and the Holy Spirit restores the broken picture of the Sonship by placing each fragment into its Identity in the whole.

  4. Will of God. Little willingness replaces heroic effort. Strength is what meets you when you stop interfering with God’s Will. The conditions are already established; God does not wait for you to become worthy. Your task is not to build a ladder to Heaven but to stop insisting the ladder is needed.

  5. Authority Problem. The authority problem wears spiritual clothing: self-deification, defiance presented as greatness, pride and false humility sharing the same premise. Self-made holiness sets conditions—unworthiness and arrogant preparation are two faces of the same claim: I set the terms. Little willingness is offered as the antidote.

  6. Atonement. The Course rejects self-atonement: you do not purify yourself as a prerequisite for correction. Only willingness is needed. Correction can be accepted in an instant, without struggle, by stopping the preference for pain—and the ego’s darkest counterfeit, that death atones for sin, is denied with a severity that offers relief.

  7. Littleness. Specialness only appeals to the deprived. Littleness distorts perspective—what is little is magnified, what is strong is cut down. The smallest willingness is not the same as littleness: willingness can be tiny and still be everything because it opens the door to a Power you do not manufacture. Littleness is the conclusion that you are inherently inadequate.

  8. Salvation. In the Holy Instant, salvation becomes startlingly small in form: one instant you are willing to offer. Special relationships are exposed as the ego’s salvation scheme—special love promising completion while preserving separation. Your part is tiny; God’s part is immense. Salvation becomes explicitly function: you are a bringer of salvation, light carried to darkness after the darkness has been looked at. Fear-dreams give way to a happier dream—perception no longer organized around guilt.

  9. Prayer. Obstacles to peace are handled by handoff: you bring fear, judgment, and interpretation to the Holy Spirit to be re-seen and repurposed, not fought or dramatized. Prayer is stepping back—refraining from substituting your plan for the Holy Spirit’s. Little willingness is enough; readiness is assumed.
