Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Healing. Healing is defined as the result of Atonement and as release from fear. The miracle is the means; healing is what follows when fear loosens. The temptation is to want the change in form to certify the change in content, but the Course keeps refusing that deal. Temporary compromises with external remedies are allowed when panic would otherwise slam the door—the gentleness is always toward the frightened mind.

  2. Atonement. The body is not the site of correction. The Course pulls you away from bodily solutions—health, protection, penance, control—and returns you to the mind’s choice. Your sole responsibility is to accept Atonement for yourself, which removes both the burden of fixing the world and the excuse of blaming it.

  3. Miracle. Miracle-mindedness requires training in a different sense of cause and effect: mind is cause, perception is effect. Level confusion—treating effects as causes—keeps you fixing the wrong level. The miracle aims at the root: the decision for fear.

  4. Body. The ego makes the body feel like cause: tiredness proves life is tiring, pain proves reality is painful, threat proves love is dangerous. The Course presses cause back to mind—the body is an effect of interpretation, not the author of experience.

  5. Sickness. Sickness begins as a confusion of levels: the mind gives creative power to the body and then feels trapped by its own projection. The miracle reverses this by returning cause to the mind, where correction is possible—not as blame for being ill, but as a relocation of agency from effect back to source.

  6. Sickness. Sickness is defined as not-right-mindedness made visible—the effect of a decision for fear and separation, often hidden and automatic. Fear can seem to hold the mind so tightly that correction feels inaccessible, and the Course names that narrow tunnel of attention without scolding, so you can see what keeps you there.

  7. Magic. The body is magic’s most convincing site. If you can be convinced the body causes what you feel, you can chase bodily solutions indefinitely and never look at the mind’s choice. The belief that matter can create reverses cause and effect so thoroughly the mind forgets it ever chose the premise. Healing is release from fear; the body is an effect, not the author of guilt or salvation.

  8. Magic. The Course makes room for a temporary compromise: when panic blocks access to mind-level healing, external agents can calm the fear. But the question is always purpose—are you using form to reduce terror so you can return to the mind, or to confirm the body as cause? Medicines become spells when objects are invested with power the mind is afraid to claim as its own.

  9. Form—Content. The Course allows a compromise approach: you can use language, temporary remedies, and practical supports if they keep you from becoming too afraid to listen. Form is not condemned; it is neutral. The diagnostic follows: if you try to correct behavior directly, you will only rearrange conflict. Bring thinking under guidance, and behavior will follow.

  10. Invulnerability. What is real cannot be threatened—this is not encouragement to be brave but a relocation of safety from the shifting world to what does not shift at all. The Atonement is the only defense that works because it does not oppose anything; it removes the belief that truth needed defending. The body is stripped of causal authority: vulnerability is traced to a purpose held in the mind.

  11. Right-mindedness. True denial is the first concrete movement: not denying feelings, but denying error’s power. You do not deny that you are afraid; you deny that fear proves something true about you. You do not deny that attack seems to happen; you deny that attack can alter what God created. This restores freedom of will—the mind refuses to submit to the jurisdiction of danger. Sickness is named as not-right-mindedness, treated with clinical kindness rather than condemnation: when you are not right-minded, the corrective is willingness to be helped, not scolding yourself into peace.
