Salvation from Fear

Salvation is reframed as a shared choice to see your brother’s sinlessness, undo specialness and sacrifice, and let the world and time serve healing rather than fear.

Teachings Drawn from This Section

  1. Sinlessness. Your brother’s innocence reflects your own. Sinlessness becomes an act of honor: refusing to agree that he is guilty even when he claims it for himself. If you cannot accept your own innocence, you will not tolerate it in him—and you will keep him assigned to the role of enemy while telling yourself you are being fair.

  2. Sacrifice. Seeing your brother as a body is already a sacrifice—you keep the useful part and sacrifice the rest. Sacrifice cannot be isolated: if you accept it for yourself, your brother shares it; the ledger always expands. The correction is intimate: receive your brother as witness rather than judge him. Every problem rests on the demand that someone suffer loss; the Holy Spirit dissolves it by showing a way in which no one loses.

  3. Cause and Effect. In relationships, the logic sharpens: you cannot bind a brother with a judgment without living under the same judgment yourself, because the act happens as an interpretation in you. The laws you place on someone else become the laws you place yourself under. The effect always returns to its source.

  4. Vigilance. The Course observes that you have already been grimly vigilant for specialness—monitoring status, scanning for advantage—and then claim peace would require unbearable effort. Another goal requires far less vigilance. Redirected to forgiveness, vigilance becomes lighter, and it is not meant to be permanent: a mind that becomes wholehearted does not need to keep scanning itself. Vigilance fades like a candle at dawn.
