T-6.III

The Relinquishment of Attack

Relinquishing attack is the mind’s uncompromising choice to teach only Love with the Holy Spirit, so safety and peace are recognized as the natural effect of harmlessness.

Understanding This Section

Voice

The voice here is expository, with the teaching delivered through straightforward explanation. The teaching is built on the contrast between both thought systems.

Approach

This section bridges the metaphysical and practical levels, leaning toward the practical. The abstraction bridges levels, connecting inner experience with metaphysical principles.

Focus

Multiple relational contexts are equally active, with the teaching working across self, brother, and larger identity simultaneously. The learner’s own mind also receives significant attention.

Setting the Stage

Relinquishment is framed as a decision about purpose, not a demand to manage behavior. Attack is treated as a mental teaching that would block God’s Communication and prove separation real, so safety cannot be negotiated with it.

Because teaching and learning are the same process, every thought becomes a lesson you strengthen in yourself. The practical starting point is to choose the Holy Spirit as Interpreter, let perception be corrected, and use peace—not outcomes—as the measure of progress.

The Threads That Meet

Attack and Teaching–Learning interlock as the engine of the unit: the ego’s attack-thought is not an isolated outburst but a curriculum, and whatever curriculum you teach becomes what you remember and experience. Love enters as the only alternative lesson, presented as identity rather than achievement; teaching Love is how the mind learns it, while teaching attack keeps the crucifixion story of guilt and punishment in place.

The Holy Spirit supplies the method. His non-attack and impartial perception keep Knowledge safe while perception is reinterpreted; cause and effect are returned to the mind that chooses, not to the dream’s shifting scenes. This is where extension replaces projection: what you give in mind you keep, and what you project you come to believe.

From that joining, peace and invulnerability are no longer abstract claims but practical consequences. The attacker becomes a classroom in which gentleness is perceived, shared, and therefore recognized as yours; salvation is described as staying free as others learn the same lesson from you.

Key Moments

Safety is defined without compromise: attack must be relinquished completely, because any form of teaching it is learning it. Next comes the hinge of practice—teaching and learning are one—so the mind is invited to let Love be the only lesson it reinforces. The movement culminates in a lived sense of protection: harmlessness reveals safety, and invulnerability is discovered by dropping the belief that attack defends you.

Beneath the Surface

Underneath the explicit counsel sits a quiet reversal of the ego’s common sense. The ego treats attack as protection and love as a bargain—specialness, preference, control—so it can keep vulnerability believable. The teaching keeps returning to one question: which Teacher is setting meaning right now?

When that question is answered for the Holy Spirit, perception becomes a bridge rather than a weapon: errors are not used to imprison a brother through projection, and communication becomes joining instead of defense. What looks like a relational problem is used to uncover the mind’s goal, and then to choose again.
