Teachings Drawn from This Section
-
Holy Instant. Doubt ends by ending divided allegiance, not by collecting evidence. The ego’s most spiritual-looking defense is postponement: after I understand more, after I become calmer, then I will be ready. The Holy Instant refuses delay. It asks you to give over your plans for salvation—those scripts meant to rescue you without surrendering separation.
-
Holy Instant. The Holy Instant is defined in terms of communication: an open mind willing to receive and give without concealment. The ego’s secret thoughts are the hidden altar where grievances and special fantasies are protected. Concealment is separation; if you want joining, you cannot keep a corner of the mind pledged to isolation.
-
Communication. The holy instant is perfect communication: mind-to-mind openness, willingness to receive and give without holding back. Purity is redefined—not as having no fearful thoughts, but as refusing to keep any thought hidden. Communication has meaning only when it is unlimited; restrict it and you return to bargaining.
-
Willingness. In the holy instant, willingness becomes the operative condition for practice. The obstacle is not lack of preparation but delay dressed as sophistication. Willingness becomes specific: willingness to let littleness go, to exchange self-made plans for God’s, to let go of hidden thoughts. For one instant, you need do nothing—not as passivity but as release of interference.
-
Will of God. The holy instant sharpens the teaching: you cannot substitute your plan for God’s and still expect peace. The plan is not a script for events but purpose. The ego’s plan is always some variation of “let me keep personal interests and still be happy.” God’s Will is already accomplished; delay, compromise, and bargaining are exposed as attempts to keep separation alive.
-
Littleness. The holy instant contains total release from littleness, but you cannot accept it while you still want littleness and protect it. There is something in the small self that feels useful—safety, innocence, permission to be excused. The practice is not searching for grandeur inside the small self but letting littleness go as a relinquishment of a cherished defense.
-
Defenses. The holy instant is what happens when you stop interposing barriers—allowing joining to be total for an instant, without a protected hidden thought held back just in case. Defenses in this register are not dramatic acts; they are tiny decisions to keep something for yourself.
-
Innocence. Secrecy blocks innocence. The loss of innocence is tied to keeping thoughts hidden—unshared even within your own awareness. The holy instant becomes inner honesty: innocence is received instantly when you truly want it. What delays it is the decision to conceal. When the hidden is brought to the Holy Spirit, the barrier to perfect communication weakens.
-
Vigilance. Vigilance is given an unexpected object: magnitude. You are asked to guard awareness of what you are against the pull of littleness—not dramatic smallness, but the quiet shrinking that masquerades as being sensible. Because the ego protects itself through secrecy, vigilance becomes honesty: the willingness to bring the hidden corner into awareness so correction can happen.
