The Holy Instant and Special Relationships
The Holy Instant repurposes special love into a classroom: dropping the past dissolves judgment, and the Holy Spirit restores equality, joining, and Love’s inclusive meaning.

Teachings Drawn from This Section
-
Holy Instant. Specialness depends on history—contracts, debts, comparisons, scarcity. In the Holy Instant the reference point shifts from personal narrative toward God as the only Reference: changeless Love that does not rank. Sharing brings gain without loss; the logic of sacrifice begins to look insane. Guilt loses its attraction because its purpose—disrupting communication—is absent when communication is restored.
-
Special Relationship. Special relationships are built on imagined needs, promising to fill a lack believed to be real. Once love becomes a selection, fear is automatic—losing the bond threatens existence, and the other’s approval begins to function like oxygen. Because the bargain is made inside time and bodies, it will shift, and the relationship becomes something you are always trying to control.
-
Special Relationship. The Holy Instant redirects purpose without destroying form. The same relationship can serve separation or awakening depending on what you want it for. No one has to be selected for Love to be true; the issue is never the form but the goal assigned to it.
-
Love. Love is all-inclusive and cannot be understood by loving parts. When you limit love to a chosen person or group, guilt enters immediately because you have made a boundary God does not recognize. The correction is not to shame attachments but to reinterpret them: content, not form. A relationship can look devoted and still be a prosecution.
-
Judgment. Judgment leans heavily on time. To judge the present, you drag the past in as evidence—old slights carried into the relationship like stones in your pocket. Suspend judgment and the frame of reference disappears. In the circle of Atonement, where you place your brother is where you stand with him; exclusion is never one-sided.
-
Time. Readiness is willingness in the instant, not accumulated spiritual effort. Truth is recognized immediately because it was never made. Given to the Holy Spirit, time feels gentle—not harsh deadlines and proof-demands but kind guidance back to this instant without condemnation.
-
Specialness. The Holy Instant offers relationship without comparison—personal needs fall quiet and the constant tally of what you get and give is suspended. To be completed in God, you must be willing for nothing special, because specialness cannot deliver wholeness; it can only offer replacements that keep lack intact.
-
Means—End. The special relationship is exposed as using another person as means to an ego end—individual salvation, being chosen, being safe at someone else’s expense. The past trains you to define what you lack and select aspects of others to meet imagined needs. Yet the solution is not to manage the relationship’s form but to change its purpose; give it to a different Teacher and the same situation becomes release rather than imprisonment.
-
Holy Relationship. A special relationship can be repurposed. Offered to the Holy Spirit, the bond is translated from an ego arrangement into a lesson in love. Specialness is built on sacrifice—the belief that closeness costs and someone must lose for someone else to gain. The holy relationship is the end of that economy: choose your brother’s release with you, and give him to the Holy Spirit as part of yourself.
-
Salvation. In the Holy Instant, salvation becomes startlingly small in form: one instant you are willing to offer. Special relationships are exposed as the ego’s salvation scheme—special love promising completion while preserving separation. Your part is tiny; God’s part is immense. Salvation becomes explicitly function: you are a bringer of salvation, light carried to darkness after the darkness has been looked at. Fear-dreams give way to a happier dream—perception no longer organized around guilt.
-
Willingness. In the holy instant, willingness becomes the operative condition for practice. The obstacle is not lack of preparation but delay dressed as sophistication. Willingness becomes specific: willingness to let littleness go, to exchange self-made plans for God’s, to let go of hidden thoughts. For one instant, you need do nothing—not as passivity but as release of interference.
