Teachings Drawn from This Section
-
Special Relationship. The trail closes by keeping you honest: special bonds protect the belief in sin by giving guilt a home where it feels justified. The savior role, the leader-follower bargain, the quiet scorekeeping—each is exposed as a way to manage an internal split by assigning function to your brother. The practice is to keep noticing purpose and to choose again at the exact moment you would rather bargain than bless.
-
Idols. When idols enter relationship, joining becomes bargaining—a sealed economy of scarcity where secrets are kept because idols cannot share. The unholy instant is the instant of offerings to idols; against it, the Holy Instant appears as a change of aim where nothing is being used to get something back. Specialness is named as an idol—power-by-comparison that seems to grant more while taking your peace.
-
Love. The holy relationship is defined by openness because Love cannot coexist with secrecy. The ego recruits intimacy into defense, turns joining into possession, and hides idols in darkness. Specialness is love’s substitute—devotion that flips into hate when its terms are violated. Love extends without withholding and finds its completion in the brother, not in triumph over him.
-
Holy Instant. The unholy instant is the moment you value an idol and separation feels precious. The Holy Instant is the alternative: a safe return from the idol to peace. Fear must have a present cause, and the Course locates that cause in dread of joining. If the cause is present, the cure is present. The miracle stands in present grace.
-
Time. Time is traced to a moment of unholiness in the mind—the choice for separation that seemed to introduce before and after. The holy instant undoes that original choice. A holy relationship is two minds choosing the present together, offering a taste of eternity inside the dream by releasing the other from the past.
